In the Doncaster North 2019 timetable I leave signal D648 at Hatfield & Stainforth in ‘Auto’ and displaying a proceed aspect. I have train 5R46 approaching Hatfield & Stainforth which is due to reverse at D1125 at 09:11 and head towards Thorpe Marsh Jn.
In this situation I intend to cancel the forward route from D648 so that 5R46 approaches it showing a red aspect. Would it matter if I left it in auto displaying a proceed aspect? What is the correct procedure in these circumstances?

Thanks for any advice.

I guess that the driver would know (both from route knowledge and from having, I hope, looked at his schedule) that's where he's supposed to reverse at? Plus, the fact he's travelling empty and has no passenger or station stops to worry about would mean he's not particularly likely to miss it. Still, setting it to danger would be a method to provide redundancy and a strong reminder to the driver in case they had gotten carried away or something (IRL, missed station stops are not unheard of, if rare, although this isn't quite that...).

Of course, none of that applies in SimSig, so it "doesn't matter", no. I can't confirm anything about real-life procedures (you'll have to ask somebody with real-life experience), although I had a PDF copy of an older issue of the Rule Book on my old computer and I can't remember seeing anything to that effect [even if my imperfect memory is correct here, it might be part of local standard procedures].

It can be left clear. the Driver knows his booked schedule and will stop and reverse at Stainforth Junction. In all such circumstances there's no need to put a signal back to "control" a driver.

Thanks for your replies. I knew that you could take either course of action in SimSig, so what I was really after was what would a signaller do IRL.
Next time I play this sim I'll just leave the signal clear as jc92 said.
