A Saturday timetable for the Swindon area. While other parts of the south west see an increase in service today, it's business as usual at Swindon. Train times have been taken from Open Train Times and Real Time Trains. Thanks also to Officer Dibble for providing diagram information.

This timetable is fully compatible with Bristol, Gloucester and Westbury timetables of the same name.

04:45 start included.

First Great Western

The dominant operator in the area, FGW operate the following:

HSS:
2tph London- Bristol
1tph London- Swansea
1train every two hours London- Cheltenham, alternating with:

West:
1 train per two hours Swindon- Cheltenham
1 train per two hours Swindon- Westbury

Thames Valley:
2tph London- Oxford 'Fast', with some services continuing to Worcester and Hereford
2tph London- Oxford stopper

All HSS services are HSTs. West trains are a mixture of Classes 150, 153 and 158, and diagrams for these are accurate. In reality, Thames Valley uses a mixture of 165 and 166s, however 165s have been assumed throughout here. A few Hereford services are HSTs, and these workings are accurate.

The Up 'Night Riviera' sleeper runs overnight, using a class 57+ Mk 3s

Cross Country

1tph Manchester- Bournemouth
1tph Newcastle- Reading, with extensions every two hours to Southampton.

A mix of 220s and 221s are used on these services. I've been unable to find diagrams for them, so 220s have been assumed throughout.

Freight

Freight traffic consists almost entirely of north-south container traffic running via Oxford and Reading (Didcot Power Station closed in 2012). There's a reasonable amount of this traffic in the morning, but it tails off quickly in the afternoon.

Other Notes

ARS can handle almost all of this timetable if you so choose, however it will need a bit of help at the start and for freight trains to and from Didcot TC.

6Z71 is an engineering train for a posession in the Swindon area, and will terminate on the Up Through.

Thanks Steamer, looking forward to playing this one!

May I request that the title of this TT on the download page include "2014", e.g.,

Swindon Summer Saturday 2014 v1.0 (Sim V4.3.7, Loader 4.3.2)

to differentiate it from the default 2005 version, also a summer TT? Thanks.

The file name is already identical to the one you've suggested?

No, as it would probably require the Kemble-Swindon redoubling. Either way, I didn't write one and the information has long since vanished from RTT.

The diverted trains appear in the normal timetable anyway, running in their normal route via Hullavington and the Severn Tunnel.

Playing Swindon Summer Saturday 2014 v1.0 (0445 Start)
SimSig Loader v4.3.2, Swindon A&B v4.3.7, ARS enabled for classes 1-4, 8,9,Other

First train is 4V34 (seeded, ARS-enabled) travelling Down Main line to Bathampton Jn, so naturally scheduled to pass Didcot Parkway Platform 1 as this is on the Down Main. However, ARS routes it to Platform 3 for no apparent reason. No other traffic around. Manually routing it via P1 temporarily disables ARS (flashing labels) for relevant area. How should I deal with this? Thanks.

It seems as if ARS has been thrown by the train seeding. Either change 'Didcot East Jn' to 'Moreton Cutting Junction', in which case ARS will route correctly, or manually route as appropriate until it has passed Didcot, at which point ARS will be fine.

It turned out to be not quite as straightforward as this. When I edited the timetable and found the first timing point (TP) was Didcot East (not shown on Show Timetable), changing this to Moreton Cutting resulted in a new TP, Moreton Cutting, being inserted above Didcot East. Trying to delete Didcot East led to an invalid message. I assure you I did not click "Add above" or "Add below, just Edit (location Didcot East).

The only method that worked was your second suggestion, manually routing to at least signal 911 and allowing ARS to take over from there.

I should mention that allowing ARS to route the train not only chose the wrong route but allowed DV34 to progress no further than 913.

If ARS wrongly routes trains again without warning, if I cannot recover the original route my only recourse may be to resume from the previous automatically saved session, 10 mins earlier.

(ADDED) I am also mindful of these comments in the Swindon A&B manual:

* Didcot East for trains approaching on the Down Relief Line, which call a route into Didcot when they are standing at Cholsey;

* Didcot North Junction for trains approaching from Oxford and requiring to cross to Didcot station

* Thingley Junction for trains coming from Westbury.

In all these cases, trains call the route earlier than might be expected, causing improper regulation, and it may be prudent to set them to non-ARS as soon as they appear on the diagram.

I think Didcot East is auto-inserted when you change it to Moreton Cutting Jn. It is possible to do it, you have to select 'ML' for path and line at Moreton Cutting also. It'll be sorted in the next release, but I'll wait a bit before updating in case anything else is spotted.

Yes, it then sets a route from the equivalent signal on the Down Main for some reason. Set the route manually until it's back on planned path, cancel any other random routes and ARS will be happy.

I think the issue is related to timetable location choice and seeding. The timetable was tested by turning the speed up and letting ARS run the show, so there's no serious issue with the ARS. The train shouldn't get to a position where you can't recover the original route: the driver will complain of a wrong route first.

As stated above, this issue is related to seeding and my choice of TT locations.

This relates to ARS messing up on regulation, not setting the wrong route entirely. I think ARS has been improved since the version for which that section was written.

Or just collar the offending premature signals until you're happy for the route to be set.
