Hi All

I'm pleased to advise you all, that this timetable is now uploaded and ready for release.

Description of this timetable
This is a 2016, standard weekday timetable for the Westbury Panel area. This is timetable is fully compatible, and able to be chained with Salisbury, Exeter, and is designed to chain with all adjacent Loader Simulations (including any future releases). The Passenger workings have been taken from data made publicly available by Network Rail, with First Great Western stock allocations based on unit diagrams. These are a snapshot of one day however, and are only intended to represent what actually happened on that one day, so these may not be entirely representative of daily operations. South West Trains stock allocations are based off the Carriage Working Notice. Freight services have been verified against actual workings for 25 May 2016. The timetable has been tested to ensure the Passenger and Freight workings do not conflict.

Three start times are provided, 00:00, 04:30 and 14:00. On the 00:00 start, 419 services are in this timetable. This is in line with last year although the passenger timetable differs fairly significantly. You will need to pay close attention to all timetables, in particular, the Freight services especially if they are running early. Westbury and Newbury will often jam up with trains, so you will need to think ahead! Pay special attention to the length of Freight Trains as, although some are booked to recess in loops in order to clear the main line to allow another train past, some are actually longer than the loop itself and will stand foul at the back.

The 14:00 start time is a new feature in response to several forum posts. This time was picked as it was felt that this was late enough to allow easy access to the evening peak services (not often played), but also early enough to encounter the ECS workings to establish the peak service. Comments on this are welcome.

There were several cancellations and diversions on the day in question. You will encounter several GWR services that "fail" and retreat with their tails between their legs to the depot. Also, the lines through Swindon were closed overnight so you will see a number of passenger and freight services destined for Bristol and South Wales diverted via Newbury.

This timetable has been written by Andrew James (kaiwhara), with assistance from John Mills (Meld) along with several other individuals.

As usual, if any errors or issues are found, please add comments to this thread, and we will address them.

Passenger Services
First Great Western

First Great Western operate almost all services through this area. The service pattern is mixed, with the London Commuter services from Bedwyn towards Reading, and rural services centred on Westbury itself. Many of these trains split, join or shunt at Westbury. Whilst there is a basic pattern of services, there are variations or additions to this on most hours. Fist Great Western still hire in a 158 from South West Trains. This is marked on the train description. The basic pattern is:

  • 1tph Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff Central.

  • 1tph Bristol Temple Meads to Westbury. These extend to a variety of destinations including Weymouth, Warminster, Southampton Central and Gloucester.

  • 1tph London Paddington to Plymouth, with extensions to Penzance. Some stop at Westbury, whilst others bypass on the avoiding lines.

  • 1tph London Paddington to Bedwyn.

  • 1tph Reading to Newbury

  • 1tp2h Swindon to Westbury.

  • 2tpd Brighton to Bristol Temple Meads.

A wide variety of 150, 153 and 158 units are used in a variety of combinations, along with a class 180, classes 165 and 166, and HST's.

South West Trains
South West Trains operate a small handful of services between London Waterloo and Bristol, along with a few route knowledge turns to Yeovil Junction via Castle Cary and Yeovil Pen Mill. The basic pattern is:

  • 4tpd Salisbury to Bristol

  • 3tpd London Waterloo / Salisbury - Yeovil Pen Mill / Yeovil Junction (destinations vary)

  • 1tpd Salisbury - Weymouth via Westbury and Yeovil Pen Mill (Route Knowledge)

Almost all of these are 159 class units, along with the odd class 158.

Freight

Freight is mostly stone traffic to and from Whatley and Merehead Quarries to various destinations across the south of the United Kingdom.

Other notes
You must read the timetable carefully, as trains will often not take the route you expect, or hold for another train to run ahead of it. This is particularly important for freight services, especially if they are ahead of time. Westbury and Newbury will often jam up with trains, so you also need to be prepared to re-platform trains if things run a bit pear shaped. Note that some Freights are longer than the total capacity of some loops, so pay particular attention before dispatching into long sections with Passenger Trains following.

We hope you find this challenging and enjoyable.

If there are any issues or errors, please let us know in this thread.

Andrew James (kaiwhara).

HOLD FIRE GUYS! At the risk of making myself look a right Twat, I uploaded the version where I hadn't properly sorted the stopping positions for joining trains at Westbury (that was on the other computer wasn't it!). :pinch:

Fixing this now. Will re-upload shortly!

Just run this and its an excellent timetable.

One small point - the "jumbo" trains from Whatley and Merehead don't fit in Woodborough loop (which is an essential requirement for these trains). I've done a bit of digging on the wagon manufacturers website and from their data calculated the length plus loco of 42 JNA/JRA to be 607 metres. I believe they were originally shown to be over 700 metres. At 607 metres, they easily get into Woodborough loop.

JNA/JRA are 13.97 metres long for the record. JHA wagons are in error too, they are 16.58 metres long and to be accurate these trains need their lengths adjusting although they all fit where they need to go without that.

Its a small point but I've also changed my copy to show these as "heavy" under the weight tab in the category details which seems to affect the acceleration rate, as it should.

Apart from that this is one of the best timetables I have come across - very detailed and no conflicts that I've found. I like very much the "d" stops you have included in most reversal movements. It give much more flexibility and real life performance. I know its not fashionable these days to have early running trains but my PSB experience is from another era and in those days, freight trains went when they were ready not at the precise minute shown in the WTT.

Its normally one of the first jobs I do when running a timetable that's new to me - going though and inserting "d" stops where required, I'm pleased to say that this wasn't an issue with this one.

Excellent work, thank you

Vince

Cheers guys - always useful to get feedback especially when its constructive and allows me to improve the work I do. This is particularly true when given references with which to work from!

Being from New Zealand, freight traffic in all honesty is my best "educated guess" based on what is most likely to have occurred, supported by what snippets of information I can get. Being in the industry myself, I am more familiar with our own trains which tend to be longer and heavier, and more mixed in nature in the UK. Naturally, some details won't be as correct as they should be.

I have a couple of timetable projects on the go elsewhere at the moment, but I will definitely flag this timetable for a version 1.2, and review against adjacent affected sims.

Thanks again!

Andrew

Hi,

As I've said before on this forum, I think many users seem to think that the the timetables just "appear" without giving a thought them and the work that is required to produce them.

After completing my first run through of it I have another very "nit-picking" comment to make.

The loco that brings 6C07 into Beechgrove MOD arriving at 1133 doesn't leave again. I've no idea what actually happens to it, but I would suggest that it would leave about 1215 L/D to Didcot HS.

However, there doesn't appear to be any routes that will validate from Beechgrove GF (rev) in any direction (other than back into Beechgrove Sidings) which seems a little odd.

One for the sim developer I suspect.

Thank you again for an excellent timetable.

Vince

I've unexpectedly found myself at my desk this afternoon; does anyone have a list of freight headcodes in question and I can look up what runs with what.... Unable to access the sim while at work to get a list myself....

Forget that - I've been advised of a somewhat convoluted way of getting out of Beechgrove MOD!

Here's what I could dig out of the magic box this afternoon - freight consists do change from day to day due to customer requirements so would take with a pinch of salt, but should give a good ballpark to start working in.

7A09 - was today as was yesterday - 59 and 44 JNA/JYA/JHA 645m

6L21 59205 5 HOA 5 IIA 16 JHA 413m

7C77 59005 20 JYA 8 JNA 369m

7V12 59201 8 JYA 9 JNA 226m

6V42 66750 23 JNA 322m

6C76 59206 9 HOA 7 IIA 12 JHA 423m

7A15 59104 1 IIA 4 HOA 15 JHA 317m

Others didn't run or weren't consisted.

James,

Thank you so much for this.

It seems an age ago now, but I was the Control Manager for Mainline Freight/EWS when the "jumbo" trains started running way back when.

I can't imagine how much of Wiltshire has left in rail wagons for construction projects around the country since then.

I'll adjust my copy of the timetable to suit - thank you again. Its very much appreciated.
