Scam message alert, above phone number sent a message, presumably randomly, to my number. Strangely I can't find anything on the Internet about this number, which you usually can for scams.

Quote:
FREEMSG: Our records indicate you may be entitled to 3750 pounds for the Accident you had. To claim for free reply with YES to this msg. To opt out text STOP
Clearly they want to panic you into replying STOP so they know it's a valid number, and will then forever pester you.

Good to know it's not just me then. There are websites where people have worked out who a phone number belongs to but I can't remember any of them either, all I can find are US ones.

Annoyingly it may not even be the right number since spoofing the caller ID is apparently very easy. Despite being on TPS and ex-directory I still get loads of phone calls on my landline from mostly debt consolidation services. I usually ask them to hold the line and check a few minutes later whether they've hung up. Some of those calls have come "from" invalid phone numbers - even 000 0000!

Seem to recall having received the same message a couple of weeks ago but of course I just ignored it - really stupid of them to try it with me in the first place as I haven't had an accident...unless I did but suffered from memory loss ::

It is important to state that you do need to be careful with these companies as if you did reply to this message with 'YES' then you are effectively consenting to them sending you the message and charging you for receiving it too.

Doing a quick search on Google for "Scam accident text message" brings up a whole wealth of results on this so have fun sifting through them all - any promising-looking results from GrumbleText.co.uk are well worth checking out (in other words, I highly recommend GrumbleText).

I remember helping out a mate with a similar problem when he was receiving messages from some silly ringtone company and I learnt a lot of useful things from this - one very useful thing I did learn was that sending 'STOP' as a reply to these sorts of things should work and it may even be the case that upon receiving such a message the company behind sending them are required to stop sending the messages to you otherwise you'd have a valid complain to make to ICSTIS PhonepayPlus who could then warn or potentially even fine the offenders for breaching some sort of rules.

Hope this helps.
