Been meaning to ask this for ages, but keep forgetting. What does it mean when a signaller interposes -EO- in a track berth. I know It's something to do with an engineering possession, but what does EO stand for exactly?

Engineers Occupation, the whole portion of line is under possession.

Follow up question: Is there a difference then between an Engineering Occupation and a T3 possession? Or is it simply that different signallers are in the habit of interposing different things?

Apparently no difference, -T3-, -EO-, and TIII are one and the same. In fact there probably is no set standard so it's probably down to each signaller. And should probably not be relied upon as an indication of whether there is a possession or not, or even what kind of possession.

At work I see a huge variation. If the possession item number is 128, for example:

-T3-, -128, *128, I128, T128, -EO-, BLOK & DETS are all common. I once even saw one signaller put in two consecutive berths "VERB OTEN".

These labels not only aid the signaller in reminding them where a possession is, but they also give controllers an idea as to where and when the possession is in place when they are observing the Train Describer Berths on remote software (eg: CCF). But, as Geoff says, these are not to be relied upon. The position of reminder appliances placed by the signaller in combination with the paperwork recording the details are what signallers rely upon.

To follow the gist of the topic, what does -T3- stand for, and is there a -T1- or -T2-?

Tx's are types of posessions of the line. It just relates to the module of the rule book that the regs for that posession are in.

it's about the 6th/7th week at signalling school, if my memory is working.... (which is week 8 or 10 since starting NR, usually)

T3 is just railway short speak for refering to engineering possession and as Ralph says, it relates to section T3 of the rule book.

T1- signalling maintainence
T2- Possession of the line in between the normal train service (where time and space allow).
T3- Full possession of the line with the only train movements being that of OTMs, OTP and engineering trains.
T4- Possession of a siding

Not too sure that Section T is in the SVR book - seeing as we don't have "Sections" at all! Would likely just be a case of informing the signalman on duty if any minor work were occuring, and a line closure in case of something more (i.e. a T3).
