Hi all, Got a quick favour to ask out of interest about something. Does anyone have a signalling diagram available covering the Great Eastern Main Line that they wouldn't mind sending to me electronically? The area I'm after in particular is between Romford and Shenfield in both directions so if anything I'd only need an extract of any signalling diagram for that stretch of the line only but if someone has a diagram covering a larger area than that (perhaps Liv St to Shenfield or even the whole GEML) and sent me that instead then I may be able to send them a signalling diagram in return for another line. If someone could assist me with this I would appreciate it - just PM me. Many thanks in advance if anyone can help. Cheers, UKTM. Please be aware that SimSig is very careful about the way that it handles confidential information obtained from official industry sources. Not sure if I worded my original request right. What I actually should probably have requested was a route map or in-fact any document which at least shows rough signal locations with signal identities shown too.

UKTM: I take it you're after the present situation? I have a couple of guards' route learning books dating back to the 1970s (i.e. the 1949 signalling) but 'twas very different then. Postal: important point but I think we may need to clarify the extent to which PNfP documents are acceptable. I recall a discussion on this, I think on John Hinson's 'Blower'. If my recollection is accurate, the main issue at the time was copyright. It was concluded that one reason for the PNfP heading was to avoid inundating the British Library with every signalling, engineering and special traffic notice the railway ever produced. It was also stated that NR had (I paraphrase) said they would not concern themselves with internet (or indeed other) publication of (technically) copyright material of this kind. So although we need to ensure we don't facilitate the passing of material that wouldn't be acceptable to NR, much of what might be involved would not be a problem. (Remember even the Sectional Appendix is now available online!) I think the thing we need to do - though I can't for the life of me think how at the moment - is establish what would be unacceptable to NR so we can be specific about what shouldn't be posted/passed on. I would like one of London Bridge control but I doubt there is one easily to hand, however if someone does know one that is legal to send (an older copy maybe?) then it would be highly appreciated! I am not being funny but I do wonder why it can't be allowed, it can't be a security issue surely, as I can still obtain mileage and line details in a quail map and still know the CSR codes, speed limits etc through NR's free online Appendix. If worst comes to shove I'll just go to bridge myself and note down the signal types and just watch the cab rides and guess some of the signals in the distance. James. Log in to reply |

The real Sectional Appendix is PNfP because of copyright and internal phone numbers and whatnot. What is on the NR Website is NOT the Sectional Appendix. It is an extract of Table A of the Sectional Appendix. It is a baseline declaration as at April 2009 with many things removed - hence why it is plastered Not for operational use. Log in to reply |

For the record, it is reasonable to use this website to ask for information that is a matter of public record. For example, it would be reasonable to ask where you could buy a Quail map, but not to ask for copies of individual pages from it. Some information is harder to classify but use your judgement wisely. We're not out to get you but on the other hand we can't be seen to be advocating actions which might be of questionable legality.

Thanks Geoff and Ralph. I was under the impression that is how it is all laid out. I hope I have not come across as requesting illegal material, just wondered if there happened to be a simple signal layout with nothing more on. Yes, it would be nice if such a thing were available. However, I'm not sure it would be a good idea giving the great unwashed the BT phone number for Woking ASC for example!

Every Saturday we rang them to enquire what was on 1E40 (I think it was- overnight seating train to KX anyway); it was a regular class 40 turn. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! If I was researching a route I used to draw myself a map of the route then get on a train and fill it in as i went along, meaning all I had to do was put the signal numbers in etc. I recently threw reams of the stuff away when I realised that most of my notes are now Simsigs either released or in production.
