Have finally got fed up with Norton Firewall- I've been fighting it all day and now in a strop it's blocking all access to anything by anything. Anyway what does everyone else use? I also have something called "Windows 7 firewall control" (I only have VISTA though) which I picked up somewhere and it seems OK- I think it's supposed to spot any unauthorised outgoing transmission and it took me a while to get some things authorised as it does not always pop-up with the "is this OK" message. I have something called AVAST on my desktop but I don't think that's a firewall programme as such. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

I'm personally using Comodo Internet Security, it's free and comes with Antivirus, Firewall as well as sandboxing unknown applications.

Avast! seems very proud to mention a lot on their Twitter feed thing that their product is top of the range and is so fantastic that it goes further than all others, etc, etc. Certainly never heard anything bad about them, yet anyway.

Avast has possibly only once given me trouble, and that game was well known for being very awkward to get to network properly (no, it's not SimSig!), in something like 3 or 4 years - plus they brought out a Pirate English version a couple of days ago, which made me very happy! I can now tell it to Polish me boot buckles on a weekly basis whilst sending any nasties to the Dead Man's Chest ;) It's quiet and it's efficient - it only starts getting loud when you start visiting dodgy websites. I got rid of Norton a couple of years ago because it became such a pain in the proverbial. I then went with Avast! I have XP though, not Vista, so cannot say how well it works on that. This is the free version I am using and so far so good, it just works away in the background and updates itself when it needs to. I don't think this free version has a firewall but I have the Windows firewall enabled. Whether that is any good or not I don't know but I have never had any problems thus far. Log in to reply |

Thanks, I was just looking at the Avast range and as well as the free one there are more advanced one- which is fine, except I clicked on a second link I found and that was to the US site. And I think teh prices once converted are vastly cheaper via the US site. £34.95 - v - $34.95 = £23 roughly and the same for the better on. Some firewalls are said to cause problems with hosting, but McAfee antivirus/firewall does allow hosting and joining multis without being set to allow it.

Shiver me timbers having problems with ye avast and ye web browsing it just locks up unless I disable ye web part of it- it's completely different to ye earlier version I have on my desk top. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

Are ye using the free version me laddie or have ye paid the pieces of eight for the treasure. If I were ye, I would get the freebie version before raiding the treasure chest. Then again I'm as tight as a Pirate ships bung. Oooo arr me laddie, shiver me timbers ....etc ...etc . When I removed Norton it threw a strop and said I was lacking in some areas- think I still am as I've had to disable the WEB Shield aspect of Avast as it prevented browsing. The biggest drawback with the MS firewall is that it cannot (XP) or does not by default (Vista, W7) monitor outward traffic. There is a full explanation here but my understanding is that it does not monitor outbound traffic by default (or cannot monitor outbound traffic in the case of Windows XP); the advanced settings for Vista and Windows 7 to enable this monitoring are difficult to configure. I ran the gambit, Norton - ZoneLabs - AVGFree - Full AVG, all on XP. Best for never giving or showing any problems was AVGFree. Not yet sure with Full AVG. It's simple enough to set-up but, (a) Theres a lot of it (12 separate sections to enable everything). (b) It seems to have really slowed my Web, e-mail access and application start-up times. (c) Seems to have a high memory usage (intermitant stalled mouse driver). Applications are OK once it's done it's Application start-up checks, so that's the section I need to get my head round. AVG Free doesn't have any firewall so that's the reason it isn't showing up problems.

I recommend Avast! Antivirus. Avast! is just like a regular antivirus system, except it includes the following: Web Shield (Scans websites as you browse for infections) P2P Shield (Great when downloading from uTorrent) Network Shield (Defend yourself from those naughty computers on your network) Instant Messaging Shield (Scan files that you may be sent via IM) Internet Mail Shield (Scans your emails for infection) Script Blocking (Turns away infected scripts) and their most useful feature: the Virus Recovery Database Generator (Keeps three versions of every file in case a virus attacks) One thing to note here, Avast! is free. You must register in 60 days of downloading, but that's free too and only requires an email address. Avast! update their virus definitions every day at least three times.
