Hi Chris, I prefer the retro stuff, esp if loco changes needed, think it adds a different dimension to TTs. However good to have some modern, though not often that many TT changes are made year on year I guess. If I was greedy, i'd say one from each decade?! A look at the Downloads/Uploads for Stafford timetables (note there are 2 pages) shows that there isn't a timetable for 1980, but there is a 1985 timetable. There is also only one TT in the 1970s era, 1971 to be exact. There are plenty of modern TTs available. Personally I'd prefer a modern TT but as there are already a lot of them available then something 'older' may be a better timetable to do. All that said, at the end of the day you'll be the one creating the timetable so it is really up to you what year/era you want to create the timetable in/for. If you'll find it easier doing a 1990 timetable (for example) then so be it. Hi, I personally prefere modern timetables, the more up-to-date the better. I think for me it enhances the immersion a bit when I know I'm signalling movements that are likely currently taking place on a weekly basis in the real world, along with the same times and stock etc. James Log in to reply |

I personally prefer the 1980s & 1990s. However there is an arguement for both cases. Having spent 90% of my railway career on the freight side opeations there is an arguement for both cases. Yes the older the timetables theey are certainly more interesting as thee are more loco changes, shunting moves & trip freights. Whereas the modern scene is much more regimented. Passenger trains tend to run in unit formations & freight trains tend to be more modulare where they are either block or inter-modal services. The main difference is that there are fewer Class 7 & 8 freights & more Class 6 & 4 services. I think the sims that give you the option of different eras is an excellent ideas, obviously subject to information available. You can't always do timetables for older eras when the sim clearly can't cater for it, due to lines missing or terminals & sidings on the sim being dis-connected. At the end of the day it is really going to depend on what eras you can get anyway with on the sim without making too many alterations to the timetable to make it fit. I personally enjoy doing any timetables which have a good amount of both passenger, parcels & freight traffic. Older timetables are a good way of showing the players of SimSig what the railway was like in some cases before they were actually born. E.G. for historical interest.

Hi Chris. I am totally impartial, like ipswich, on whether you do a modern or a retro timetable. I tend to enjoy the loco run-rounds at Sheffield and on my new Gloucester timetable, but its also much easier to have DMU's or EMU's running in and out of the station, and creating more space, and thus more capacity and a better service. They both have pro's and con's, but its kinda up to you, on which you'd prefer to make. My Vote: Bristol Modern Timetable "Signalman Exeter" Log in to reply |

Earlier eras tend to have more freight, and loco moves, which is handy for multi-play, just look at the Sheff 83 and Trent 88, and their popularity. An option to help suit all tastes would be to have a basic TT, but with an add-on(s) for the freight and specials. I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Paul, unless AndyG is referring o the Trent 1988-89 timetable I'm witing, which he tested via multi-play over a few weekends abour 5 weeks ago. Other than that I'm not too sure. I've written about two thirds of it, but due to the fact that so many of the Power Stations & Colliery lines having sidings dis-connected I didn't think it was too viable to finish it off at this stage. If & when Kurt gets round to doing a 1980s era layout for Trent, then I will finish it off. Can't help you anymore than that.

I like TT's that have a lot of variety, so that every time i run the TT, there's something new to see that i didn't see last time. Lot's of varied traction, lots of varied stock. I like to be able to see what loco is on the front of what train and a rough idea of what it's hauling. I prefer the 80's TTs as there is much more to do than there is on most modern TTs and thats just the way it should be. Oh and the busier the better!

As far as I'm concerned, both have their merits. I like modern WTTs and being able to properly visualise what is going on using my knowledge of modern ops and traction. However I also love the 70s and 80s TTs with the myriad shunts and usage of track which doesn't see much use in the modern TTs - Edinburgh for example which retains a number of sidings and loops which are almost totally unused in the modern TTs. Hi Derbybest, Some time ago I expressed an interest in doing a modern Sheffield TT to reflect the increased frequency of London-Sheffield services. You kindly offered to help. My ambition never came to anything as I don't have access to the necessary WTT's. I'd like to return the favour. I wonder if you would be interested in splitting the workload - one of us does the modern TT and the other does a retro TT? That way everyone gets something that they will like in a shorter time frame. I would of course reimburse any cost of sending me your WTT's and I'd be sure to return them to you at the end. Exactly, and my KX 55 and Tony Reese's 1922 examples are a trade off between accuracy and fitability(?) and the end result is usually chaos as nothing can keep to time - but is all very good fun and 58050 said: Older timetables are a good way of showing the players of SimSig what the railway was like in some cases before they were actually born.
