How about Oxford as you have Hinksey, the sidings, Oxford North junction and also the cowley brand line

Would be interested in knowing a bit more information about the area of control for Oxford e.g: 'fringe' stations, junctions, etc., etc., before I gave my views on weather or not I'd like it as a simulation.

Oxford PSB controls the Birmingham Mainline from Heyford (between Aynho Jn and Wolvercot Jn) through to Appleford, as well as the Single Line between Wolvercot Jn and Ascott-under-Wychwood (although the latter itself is controlled from a signal box by the same name), the single Line from Oxford North Jn - Claydon, which includes the entirety of the Bicester Town branch and the Cowley Branch - a single track line from Kennington Jn to the BMW Car Plant in Cowley, just south of Oxford.

It'd make a reasonable 1-person sim - traffic isn't majorly busy, and primarily forms repeating patterns. Hypothetical chains would be Swindon B (Didcot), Banbury South, Claydon LNE and Ascott-under-Wychwood

I gather that regulating traffic in and around Oxford station is quite a challenge too - although traffic levels aren't up to the levels of some sims, and obviously it's a smaller area, there's not a lot of room to play around with at Oxford (and I believe most or all terminating passenger trains need to shunt - whether that's because of a lack of facility to depart back South from the arrival platform, or just a lack of platform capacity, I don't know). The regulating skill required to handle the stopping passengers, express passengers and an intense and varied mixture of freight over a two-track railway would seem quite considerable too.

N.E. Scotland, on the other hand, is an interesting area to simulate, but - for me - isn't that interesting in terms of traffic levels.

I had an email about a year ago asking if I was interesting the information for Oxford- I said I was but nothing arrived. It is one that I have in my "I'd like to do" pile.

Oxford traffic levels not up to much, I must be looking at the wrong screens at work when I see headcodes everywhere! Oxford would be an excellent challenge for anyone, the station especially.

I dare say that Oxford using a timetable back in the 1970s/80s would have been much better, using the current infrastructure. There where, I think hourly loco hauled services terminating from Paddington which would require to be recessed and shunted and I suppose traffic to Cowley would have been much stonger. There is also plenty of scope for diversions off the main line which require going through Oxford. I believe this may have been done on occasion when there where problems with the line out of Birmingham to Euston.

Yes, most of the London - Oxford were hauled, although run round was in the down sidings, rather than shunt released, so might be off sim. You had some attaching of vans and certainly a platform occupation problem. it is slightly easier now as the main platform is bidirectional and most of the trains are shorter.

I have some recollections, so would be inclined to do a TT if I picked up a suitable WTT. However as with all sims, good data is key, timetables will then follow.

Yes spent many a day thrashing Class 50s on the Oxford Commuters, as well as some of the XC services that changed to electric at New Street or was there regular a Paddington to New Street service, can't remember- I know there was a Wolverhampton to Paddington via High Wycombe train though which was booked a 50.

There certainly was a regular Birmingham NS - Paddington service in the 70s.

When the Paddington-Birkenhead trains were stopped in 1967, a loco-hauled semi-fast service between Padd and New St was retained for a few years, with most trains calling at High Wycombe. Princes Risboro, Bicester (North), Banbury and Leamington, and reaching New St via Bordesley Jn, St Andrews Jn and Grand Jn.

In about 1972, all but one in each direction per day were diverted to run via Oxford and Reading.

At one stage this service included one daily trains in each direction along a route which continued from Birmingham to Worcester SH and then back to Oxford and Paddington via the Cotswold line. I well remember the 'anticlockwise' service as it was decribed on the main indicator at New St as this:

As you can see, the LMR couldn't even spell "Kingham" correctly. (On an earlier visit I remember seeing "Wolverampton" on the Solari at NS!)

Gradually over the years, the Paddington-Birmingham services got absorbed into the InterCity cross-country network and gradually diverted, at the southern end, to other destinations.

I've been in Italy last week, where I saw this next station announcement in a train 'Prolsima fermati Ca[tellammare di [tabia' instead of 'Prossima fermata Castellammare di Stabia'.
