Cambridge Island Platform - progress 14/09/2011 at 15:05 #20935

Hi

I took this photo this afternoon of Cambridge Island Platform this afternoon, which may be of interest to Simsiggers.

The Shovlin road-railers on the platform 7 line are shuffling up and down installing the platform canopy supports. 66720 is on the platform 8 line unloading materials.

(Incidentally, "Platform 7 Line" and "Platform 8 Line" will be the new official names of the lines.)

Nice photo, thanks for sharing. Saw the progress of the work back in July when I was passing through and certainly looks different from what I remember.

Probably deliberate too, makes the mess look better for the passengers!

Haven't been to Cambridge station for years, and didn't know this was being built. Is the new platform going to be the same length as platforms 1+4 is ? Have services really increased so much that the station needs this extra capacity - or are there other plans to remove the bays?

The new island platforms will be 12 car length and no other platforms will close. This is needed because of longer London services.

Thanks for that. Ah yes the planned longer services. Whilst an improvement for many on this line, they'll just take longer to pass through my local station

Andrew is partially correct - only one of the new platforms is required to accommodate longer trains, so that 12-car trains can operate to both London terminals. The other is to cater for future growth in services.

The platforms are being built to accommodate 10-coach IEPs, which will be longer than 12-coach trains of standard length.

We (on the GN main line) already have 12 coach FCC trains - not that they stop at Biggleswade. I understand that Letchworth will be one of the first to be extended.

Also, 8 Car formations of the Class 379 units are becoming more common at Cambridge according to a Railway Magazine.

Two articles on RailNetwork.info about this.

Network Rail submits plans for Cambridge

New platform and bridge for Cambridge

Three articles from Rail.co about this.

New platforms and footbridge at Cambridge station given the go ahead

Council grants permission for Network Rail improvements between Cambridge and London

Network Rail nets £2m property deal for Cambridge station refurbishment

The second one above (from Rail.co) mentions at the start of the 3[sup]rd[/sup] paragraph the following:

Adding two new 270m bi-directional platforms – numbered 7 and 8

Letchworth is undergoing the extension works now - though they appear to be painfully slow works despite being worked on during the daytime behind physical barriers. With no delay to work through its proximity to the line, you would think they could lay more than half a dozen bricks a day.
I doubt Baldock will ever get such treatment

Sounds like what my wife says about my bricklaying in the back garden.

The workers at Letchworth seem to spend most of their time either sitting around on the grass or ambling from one end of the platform to the other!

I don't see the point in Letchworth getting the 12 car upgrade. I think it would make more sense for the 12 cars to run KLN, CBG, RYS, SVG, KGX in peak; and KLN, CBG, SVG, STP, and the south off-peak. Serves the major stations along the line and that way every station between CBG and SVG is within a reasonable distance of a big train during rush hour.

In fact, very few 12 cars stop at SVG; most 12-cars run non-stop KGX to PBO or CBG or occasionally stop at SVG, sometimes BIW, HUN, SDY and SNO. And towards CBG occasionally SVG and RYS.

What Letchworth needs more than anything else is a 3rd platform - although I don't think there's anywhere to put one? for the 313 reversing moves.

Increase capacity through Letchworth station and along with the Hitchin Flyover; that's half the battle won.

Actually, Letchworth was built to be upgraded to two island platforms when finance permitted, but the 3rd and 4th tracks were never built. That's why there are platform canopies on both sides.

However, platform extensions have put paid to that ever happening.

What Letchworth really needs is more of the evening peak "first-stop Letchworth" services (xx15, xx45 ex KX) that then go on to stop at Baldock. That way I wouldn't have to get off at Letchworth (along with several others) and await the very slow following service. Sorry am I being a bit selfish now

I've often wondered if Letchworth had platform loops at one time, I don't think it did but there's something about the way the platform buildings are designed and positioned that gives the impression.

Yeah, I often see people getting off the fasts and hanging about. Mind you, I often do the same at Hitchin by getting the XX10s or XX40s that stop there. 12 coaches so lots of seats.

One small problem though, Biggleswade can only take trains of up to 8 cars long - 12 car trains do not stop at Biggleswade at the moment.

The 12 car services to Kings Cross in the morning peak only call at Huntingdon, St Neots and Stevenage while the 12 cars to Peterborough in the evening peak only call at Hitchin, St Neots and Huntingdon.

12 car services on the Cambridge branch line join/divide at either Cambridge or Royston depending on the time of day.

I believe the OH north of Cambridge (or maybe it's Ely) can't support 12 (or even 8?) coach trains.

The OLE restrictions are no more than 5 x 4-car units between Milton FS and Littleport, and the same number between Littleport and Lynn.

North of Cambridge only Ely can take 12-coach trains, but taking that with the the OLE restrictions the de-facto limit is 8 coaches. Plus 8-coach trains can't serve the smaller stations (unless they are 379s).

All a result of the Lynn electrification being done on the cheap!
