NX Panels without TORR 29/09/2011 at 11:00 #21401

Hi folks - quick queston about what the signaller sees when operating an NX panel without TORR.
When the train passes a signal, and the signal changes back to red, what does the signaller see?

I assume the signal on the panel shows red (pretty obvious) but I'm not sure about the track circuits in rear of that signal. The circuit immediately prior to the signal would have been occupied (hence would be lit in magenta on the panel), but would it now be unlit, or would it be lit in white (as the route is not automatically released)? Also what happens to the button at the previous signal. This would have been lit until the train clears the section controlled by that button, but does it stay illuminated, or does it go out?

When TORR is enabled I presume both the track circuits and the entance button both become unlit (assumng the entrance signal is manually operated).

Any replies gratefully received.....

Mike

the signal drops to red on the panel, and the track circuit remains white. the signallers needs to pull the entrance button to drop the route back to unlit

Visually there is no difference between a panel that has TORR and one that doesn't, once a train has passed with the route yet to release. The entrance button will remain white, the signal will go back to danger, and the route lights will remain white.

With TORR the entrance button will eventually extinguish and the route lights will drop away behind the train, both of which occur a couple of seconds or so once the rear of the train has passed the signal or left the track circuit as appropriate.

There are, of course, always exceptions to the norm.

Thanks for this...... next question......

How do the berth on an NX panel differentiate between Zero and the letter o? I'd have thought that they might have put a slash through a zero but in the example I have seen (Preston) they dont.

Example of display is attached.....

That could be because someone have used the letter 'O' instead of the number '0'

At London Victoria, zero's have a diagonal line through them.

The only place you'll see an O, rather than an 0, is the second digit - simples! The exception is if it's something like BLOK, in which case it should be obvious it'd not a TD anyway.

In Derby PSB, the original train describers used dials to set up the descriptions prior to interposing. Dials for characters 1,3 and 4 only contained numerics, dial 2 only contained alphas, so it was therefore impossible to put an 'O' where a '0' (zero) should be or vice versa. On more modern TDs, where descriptions are set up using a keyboard, it is possible to mix O's and 0's, an error which normally becomes apparent when a train fails to pick up automatic TRUST train reports, eg when 2N10(zero) is interposed as 2N1O(oh) or 1O(oh)08 is interposed as 10(zero)08.

Do they have no form of data validation then?! It would be quite easy to restrict the input to the format of a reporting number.

Going Back to the original question, on Western Region Panels the first track indication will flash when the route has been used.

One of a few neat little features that the Western Region put on their panels.

In the first shot you can see a train going from right to left. The signal has been cleared and all route lights are lit.

In this next shot, the train has passed the signal. All but the first route lights are lit because the signaller has not cancelled the route. The first route light appears to be extinguished now, however it is actually flashing and the photo has been taken between flashes.

This feature makes it very easy for the signaller to spot a route that has been used and needs re-stroking.

Hmmm, that's a good idea for a thread.

You're correct of course.

Re the modern TDs Ralph, I was commenting on TDs generally not specifically Derby PSB. When I left Derby PSB (back desk) nearly a decade ago the old TDs were still in use, they were replaced about 6 years ago and I've never seen the new ones physically used so cannot comment on any data validation. The incorrectly-entered TDs normally came to light when the TOC's whould ring us in Control asking us to request the signaller change an incorrectly interposed description.
