Some of you know the fares structure fairly well so I'm hoping I can reduce the cost of the following trip on 28th December:
0911 Swindon-Westbury
1018 Westbury-Waterloo
14:45 Padd-Swindon
Obviously I can get a combination of single tickets, whether advance or off peak, but if there's a way of getting a return valid via this circular route then that may work out cheaper. I think if I was starting at Westbury then a return to London would be valid via both routes - but I'm starting from Swindon. Best so far is about £51.

(Yes, we're doing all the diversionary routes avoiding Reading that day - HSTs via Melksham, into Waterloo, and via Greenford and Banbury.)

Looks like WSB-LON is valid via Swindon so an off peak return from WSB to LON plus a single SWI-WSB should cover it, about a tenner less than above. Question now is whether alighting at an intermediate station on an off-peak return is valid - if a break of journey is permitted then it should be ok.

Normally off-peak return rules are that break of journey is not permitted on outward leg but is permitted on return. You would need to check for your specific ticket. The FGW web-site shows this in a pop-up for an Off-Peak return on the 1018 ex Westbury on 28/12:

"BREAK OF JOURNEY

Break of journey is permitted on the return direction of Off-Peak tickets, and is generally permitted on the outward direction unless prohibited for the journey that you are making. If you intend to break your outward journey, please contact us to check if it is permitted. You can always break your journey where necessary to change train."

From ATOC routing guide there is a bit on Dual Route availability- can't cut and copy the section.

I seem to recall there were rules for creating a circular fare in the fares manual but I can't find it here at the moment- something like add the fares and divide by 2.

You gotta love meaningless lawyer-drivel. Anyway, the break of journey would be on the return - single to Westbury, outward on the off-peak, return to Swindon on the off-peak, breaking journey at Swindon (and not continuing to Westbury).

I think, in this case as both routes seem to be valid on the same ticket, there is no need for the average of two returns.
