Well there I was looking at the price to have a little bit of steam in the system once again. Considering it is quite a while since I last indulged I thought I would have a look at what was on offer. Ah! that looks good I thought. A nice jaunt from the Cross up to York on the 24th November for the St. Nicholas Fayre. Behind Tornado as well. Might not see too much of it on the return leg at that time of the year but there you go. Now let me see...may as well go the full hog and get some Pullman style dining thrown in. Oopps nearly forgot the Carbon offset tax contribution (where and who does that actually go to). Right press the key and go to the booking page. I am now confronted with some extras. A sponge cake to celebrate on the way home a mere 20.00 pounds, but no they have given me an option here also, how about a luxury Xmas fruit cake at 40.00 pounds. Right I think that is it....press the button for the booking.....wow...hold on there deputy dog. I am now confronted with an amount of 501.75 pounds for me and the other half to have a days trip to York.
It is not that I cannot afford it....but come on, they are having a laugh are they not.
Is it me being Scrooge this Christmas or just not wanting to play ball with these exorbitant prices?
Can anyone tell me how they can justify this and particularly a Xmas fruit cake at 40.00 pounds.
Surely you would have to be a fruit cake to pay that amount.

Scrooge (Merry xmas to all)

It's probably less of a rip-off than the sponge cake at £20, but even so seems excessive. My wife often makes & decorates cakes for people and it can cost over £20 for ingredients before you take account of the time involved, but that's probably 3 or 4 times larger than the cake you would get on the train (and more nicely and personally decorated!).

I'd get yourself a supermarket best sponge or fruit cake (or push the boat out and get both and still keep the change!) - I can't remember but there might even be an M&S food on York station.

I made our Christmas cake a couple of weeks ago (8" sq- Sainsbury's luxury fruit mix etc.) and it cost around £9 from memory.
