Hi, Out of interest, which boxes still work in the Crewe area, and what typre are they? Quail Maps shows: Crewe Signalling Centre (CE) Crewe Coal Yard (CY) Basford Hall Jn. (BH) Salop Goods Jn. (SG) Gresty Lane (GL) Crewe Sorting Sidings North (NY) Crewe Steelworks (SW) However for some reason it doesn't show boundries of control. Any info appreciated! As far as I know : Basford Hall Crewe South Crewe North Crewe Steel works Crewe Coal Yard Crewe sorting Siding Crewe Grest Lane. RED not sure if there two panels / workstations ? Not sure of types. i thought north and south closed to be replaced "temporarily" with crewe SCC. north is now a museum run by the heritage centre with the frame and block instruments fully operational for demos. all the other ones headshot listed still exist

ok. havent got a clue how north/south is worked now but its reasonable to assume two duties giving the volume of phonecalls and traffic

From what I can remember (i.e a recent RAIL magazine article plus books I've read over the years), the boxes around Crewe are a mixture of electro-mechanical ones (i.e lever frames operating electric points and MAS) and panels. Crewe PSB (commissioned 1985) controls the station area and the Kidsgrove line out as far as Alsager, whilst Gresty Lane, Steel Works, Basford Hall & Coal Yard act as the fringes to it on the Shrewsbury, North Wales Coast and WCML south & north lines respectively. All bar Gresty Lane have lever frames in them. Sorting Sidings (OCS panel) doesn't signal main line trains, only the yard complex south of the station. There's also an electro-mechanical box on the Independent Lines at Salop Goods Jcn to the west of the station. Thanks for all the info- quite surprised to find that 390s are signalled by lever frames! (Still coulour light, I know, but closest thing). All TCB I take it, although won't Gresty Lane be AB to the next box along to Shrewsbury? (not for much longer though now  )

Yep, took over the functions of two more modern (60's era if I remember rightly) boxes at Hartford & Weaver Jcn vi an NX panel whilst keeping its frame for the local area. Fringes with Warrington PSB, Coal Yard and also Greenbank panel on the CLC line via the Hartford chord. In the other direction, Basford Hall now works to Stoke-on-Trent SCC following the demise a few years ago of Betley Road and Madeley boxes and the 60's era PSB at Norton Bridge. Crewe Steel Works meanwhile works AB to Beeston Castle, which is the only surviving box on the Chester line now (Chester PSB supervises the rest).
