Royston Tutorial - learning to use SimSig 14/10/2011 at 12:55 #21763

As a beginner to SimSig I thought I would start this thread as a help to others trying to find their way into SimSig.

I chose the Royston simulator as it seems generally agreed that this is a nice easy sim in which to learn the intricacies of British railway signalling. There is even an unfinishedTutorial Timetable for this location (see SimSig > Simulations > Timetables > Royston and note my comments regarding it). Load the Royston Tutorial v1.0 files (.wtt and .wtr) into the Royston subfolder of Program Files\Simsig, and use it.
Here are some hints which may help you:

1) In Options > Display, check Windowed Mode. This forces SimSig to run in its own window instead of fullscreen, enabling you to access help pages, signalling diagrams, etc. while playing the sim. You will have to exit and reopen Royston for windowed mode to be applied.

2) No, in Windowed Mode the window is NOT resizeable. Don't waste time trying to figure out how to do this.

3) The Train List (press F2 to open it) is NOT a list of impending train arrivals. It lists only the trains currently in your area. For all future arrivals you need to Edit the Timetable (don't be afraid, press F4) and click the Timetables tab.

4) Keep the Glossary page handy at all times, otherwise you may be baffled by the jargon used (What on earth is an ECS?)

Please feel free to add your own beginners' hints here.

Maxand - welcome to the addictive world of SimSig. As you will have gathered, everything in this world is done by volunteers and there are a lot of people who give a lot of time in keeping the world ticking over. Your comments are all useful and to the point. Have you considered putting them onto the Wiki as a "Beginners Tips" page. As Chris Lord (Lardybiker) posted in July:

"Anyone can access the wiki and edit it. In fact everyone is encouraged to do so. Its a way for everyone to involved on SimSig even if you aren't involved in Sim development or testing. It should be treated as a resource by everyone, for everyone. If there's something missing then go ahead and add it. If there are inaccuracies, feel free to correct them. Your knowledge and experiences can then help others including me. "

There is enough knowledge out there to make sure that the Wiki is reasonably accurate and any typos and errors in new entries suitably amended.

Thanks Postal. No, I hadn't considered myself experienced enough to add to the Wiki, but on the other hand, first impressions can be very important for playability. I've made my own learning notes (as I'm sure most of us do) and will take a look at the Wiki when I understand SimSig a bit better.

Hi Maxand, just to echo the comments here so far. I've only been a Simsigger for a matter of months, but prepare to become addicted. The Royston sim is certainly a good one in which to pick up the basics before going on to the 'hard stuff'. There's some excellent sims available due to the dedication and expertise of the team. Have fun! Mal.

Your view "not experienced enough" is the same as that of a lot of others when they first start. The problem is us "old timers" that have been using SImSIg for a while don't necessarily see the issues new users would have. This is why in this case lack of experience is a good thing! As you learn, using those experiences to help others.

Now, If you feel confident enough to edit the Wiki yourself then please feel free to go ahead. If not, let me know and we'll work together to get your comments added in the right place!

......And welcome to the wonderful world of SimSig.

Chris
