I'm a Signaller at Saltley PSB, and I was wondering when it will be available to use.

Thanks

The South Bottom Panel went over a few years ago, which covers Snow Hill to Startford and Leamington, and the Saltley North Panel which covers Tamworth, Daw Mill and the Numeaton line goes over next month, the Centre Panel goes over next year April time, and the South top panel goes over in a few years time.

Hope that helps

Sorry for the lack of updates on Saltley lately. I hope to have it ready very soon, unfortunatly I have had some pretty major personal issues lately, which as I am sure you will understand, take precidence over everything. Hope to get the ball rolling again very soon
But it is worth the wait...not only because of 2R43

I wonder if that will feature in a fax report delay for when 2R43 is in a timetable!

Could always change him to 2R43-1 at Barnt Green with a 15-20mph speed, then to 2R43-2 at Alvechurch back to linespeed.

Interestingly, the signals in Snow Hill station have WM signal no. prefixes, whereas the ones from I THINK Leamington northwards all have LJ as the prefix.

BTW why does LJ3325 never seem to show a green aspect? Anything to do with the North Warwicks line?

Regarding Snow Hill, I presume it is now under the control of West Midlands Control Centre (near the site of Saltley PSB), hence the prefix WM.

Regarding Leamington, LJ relates to Leamington Signal Box (a Westcad I believe). Not sure about the signal though.

The way signals & points are pefixed on the West Midlnds Signalling Centre are to do with the line of route. LJ is Leamington Jewelery Quarter,
CB Coventry Birmingham, RC Rugby Coventry, LC Leamington Coventry, CN Coventry Nuneaton. Rugby SCC is done in a similar way and also Stoke SC

As far as I know, both WM and LJ signals are controlled from the West Midlands Control Centre (next to Saltley PSB). The difference is that, while the LJ signals are new signals on the line between Leamington and Jewellery Quarter, the WM signals are the same signals that used to be controlled from Saltley PSB, just replated; for example, the down starters at Moor Street used to be SY192 and SY194, but when control got transferred from Saltley to West Midlands they got renumbered (and replated) as WM192 and WM194.

I believe the box at Leamington remains; it was originally installed as a PSB in the 80s but got replaced by a WestCad in 2004(?) when the mechanical box at Fenny Compton was abolished and Banbury-Leamington upgraded from AB to TCB. That said, there were plans afoot to transfer (i.e. recontrol without resignalling) Leamington area to West Midlands...

But yeah, pretty much all the modern (post 2000) "big" signalling installations are done with two-letter codes to indicate line of route: it's used by (almost) all signals controlled from Rugby, Stoke, West Midlands (the new Saltley), East Midlands (the new Derby), South Wales (the new Cardiff)... The exception is Scotland, where the new control centre at Glasgow keeps to the Edinburgh/Paisley/Motherwell style of doing things, where the first letter indicates the box and the second the interlocking e.g. EH = Edinburgh, Haymarket or GS = Glasgow, Shields Jn.

underwood: LJ3325 as you know is on the down main at Acocks Green station. The next signal in advance is LJ3327 which protects Tyseley South Junction, then LJ3329 which protects Tyseley North Junction. Provided a route is set from LJ3329 and LJ3329 is showing a yellow, double yellow or green, then LL3325 will show a green. As you suggest, most of the trains through ACG on the down will be going across to the Down Snow Hill line at LJ3329, and often there will be another train on the up or down to/from the North Warwicks lines. There will be occasions when trains can get a clear run though - as I type, 2V12 has just left ACG and would have received a green aspect as the route is set and clear all the way to Bordesley.

Thanks all for the explanation of the signal post prefixes. It makes a lot of sense now.

As for LJ3325 which stands just about under the road overbridge, thanks again. I asked because I've stood on Acocks Green station loads of times and only ever seen it on green once - and that wasn't for long! It soon went back to single yellow without a trian passing. It seems to be on double yellow most of the time unless a train passes of course!

I hadn't realised that Banbury-Leamington had only fairly recently been converted to TCB. AFAICT, Marylebone- Aynho Junction is still AB - or is that incorrect now as well?

Me? I didn't say anything? :P

If anyone has the SimSig meet version of this, would someone be able to tell me the exit/entry locations for the Lichfield services please? I believe it it re-enters at the north end to a second exit point too?

Just got some times to save ready for TT creation, just it's long and need to cut the Lichfield part out, but I don't know where to as I don't know the entry/exit point!

Any help appreciated!

James.

The Redditch - Lichfields won't re-enter once they've left Saltley's area of control (to New Street PSB). New Street passes them to Aston SCC shortly after Aston North Jn (after they pass the physical location of Aston SCC!), which then controls them right up to Lichfield.

Neasden - Risboro' was resignalled with TCB and MAS in the early 1990s, the first beneficiary of Chris Green's "total route modernisation" approach he developed for Network Southeast. Risboro;/Bicester/Aynho was TCB from the time the line was singled (1970s? - before my time anyway), with Bicester worked from a small panel in Risboro' North. And of course Marylebone - Neasden was TCB from 1923, with the first ever use of "daylight" colour lights on a British main line (as opposed to some suburban installations); most, if not all of those signals survived until the resignalling of the early '90s.

Thanks for that KBarber. I take it that Princes Risborough station area is still manually controlled as I've noticed the signals stay at red until a train is due, then go single yellow, then green rather than progessively returning to green a short while after a train has gone by (a-la Hampton-In Arden say).

It's part of Marylebone IECC and ARS so controlled signals will tend to stay red until ARS sets a route for a train - typically keeping two green signals in front of each train. There are auto signals north of the station but because it's a bi-directional pair of lines, the auto signals are held at red by the interlocking until a train is signalled towards them.

Marylebone IECC controls all the way from Marylebone to just short of Aynho Junction, as well as Aylesbury. The bit between Stoke Mandeville and Harrow is controlled by London Underground, so Chiltern trains disappear from Marylebone's control for a while before popping out the other end.
