Hi, I'm planning to build this route for Railworks 3 (akaTrainsimulator 2012). One set of information I could do with is reasonably accurate gradients for the route. I've heard of a book that has some of these for main lines, but doubt whether this route would be covered. Any ideas where I could look? (I think I've got Langwith/Elmton&Creswell/Whitwell covered, it's just the rest ..plus Worksop-Gainsborough while we're at it) Cheers.

Starting at Radford Jn (125m55c) it's uphill: 590 to 126m08c, 290 to 126m78c, 820 to 127m12c, 381 to 127m56c, 263 to 129m58c, 289 to 130m25c, 163 to 130m36c, 124 to 131m35c, 79 to 136m66c (junction, change mileage to 138m31c), 79 to 138m42c, 104 to 138m67c, 224 to 138m72c, level to 137m17c (change of mileage from 138m79c to 137m11c), then downhill: 120 to 137m58c, 151 to 139m53c, 139 to 140m20c, 71 to 140m26c, 130 to 140m38c, 253 to 140m51c, 202 for 5c, 138 for 5c, 130 to 141m07c, 137 for 3c, 148 for 7c, 104 for 11c, 170 for 4c, 163 for 7c, 266 for 7c, 237 to 142m06c, 279 to 142m27c, 207 to 142m35c, 259 to 142m42c, 242 to the zonal boundary at 144m15c, 214 to 144m64, then uphill at 200 to Shirebrook. At which point my energy runs out, I'm afraid.

Clive, that's fantastic, thank you so much for typing all that in! That's it covered up to north of Whitwell tunnel, so if anyone can point me in the right direction..however the last section would be the easier bit, as I think the grades are moderate, and there are a few level crossings, so I can use ordnance survey height data. Worksop to Gainsborough is covered in 'BR Main Line Gradient Profiles', which I would highly recomend. It contains all of the main routes in England/Scotland/Wales, plus some less obvious ones. It is steam era, so it contains some long since closed routes, for example the S&D and the Woodehead line.

It's not quite flat..Worksop's at 40m or so, and Nottingham Midland is around 30m, but it goes via Kirkby Summit at around 160 m, all over 30 miles or so and with only 2 shortish tunnels. Not the heaviest grades in the UK, I'm sure, but I didn't realise quite how steep it is in places. Clive's info gives a 5 mile stretch at 1 in 79 leading up to Kirkby. Sam, it's going to be a long term job, I think, but when there's something to test, I'll let you know. If I forget, it will eventually be put up in the UK Trainsim freeware library. Log in to reply |
