Managing saved games (.SSG) in Windows 7 and Vista 18/11/2011 at 00:42 #23177

I wanted to delete some of my earlier saved game (.SSG) files, only to discover that although they appear to be kept in Program Files/SimSig/[sim name] folder, all that's actually there are the timetable (.WTR, .WTT) files, even with hidden and system files displayed.

My PC uses Windows 7 Home Premium, so some of the Administrator functions are not available. For example Local Users and Groups is only available in the Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions but is not available in the Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium editions. Windows 7 and Vista contain more smoke and mirrors than good ole XP, so it turns out that the files are most likely in Users/[username]/Application Data and well out of the hands of simple morons like me. For more information see the posts in this thread.

Here are a couple of workarounds for those using Windows 7 who do not want to fuss with Admin logons, etc.:

1) If all you wish to do is delete or rename one or two .SSG files, run the sim, select New and access your saved games folder by selecting "Load Game" (IMO confirming that SimSig really is a game!). Right-click the .SSG file to be deleted/renamed, perform this function then click "Cancel".

2) For improved permanent access, do what others have done and create your own folder, e.g., C:\SimSaved, well away from C:\Program files, then open SimSig, load the game from the hidden folder, choose C:\SimSaved, and save it there. Now your saved games are accessible to batch file management such as group deletion, mass renaming (e.g., using Better File Rename), etc.

In general, SimSig tends to remember where it saved the last game (C:\SimSaved) when the time comes to reload it. In this case, you may suddenly wish to access the default hidden folder for loading a .SSG file you forgot to transfer. My own solution is to install Direct Folders. When you choose "Load Game" or "Save Game As" and the hidden saved games directory pops up, double-click in whitespace to bring up Direct Folders, click Recent, then Current Application (which should be your sim's name) and the hidden folder will be displayed.

I haven't found an option in SimSig to nominate a different folder in which to save downloads. Please advise if this can be done.

It all revolves around whether you have the "Use Public Folder" option checked in the F3 screen. There was a bit of discussion about this earlier in the year in this topic.

Thanks postal for that info. Unfortunately this option is missing from Southampton and dear old Royston, so newbies running Windows 7 are more likely to have this problem starting with older, easier sims.

If I am really needing to save it there, I would open Windows Explorer, navigate to Program Files, and set the permission for the SimSig folder.
i.e. allow "full control" for "Users"

But actually I just save the file in my custom folder on the first time I save in a particular sim, then everything goes fine.

Not only saved games can go astray, timetables can, too. I just came across this thread relating to Wembley Suburban timetable files. But luckily it proves to be fairly straightforward once you sort it out (like most things in SimSig).

Older sims aren't necessarily easier.

Anyway, at least on this machine the various file dialogs let you work out where in the filing system you are by stepping upwards. So you should be able to find where it's storing them.

Clives point definately relates to both Sheffield and Kings Cross which were made during the paged sim days. These are both rather large sims, particularly Kings Cross.

Sheffield isn't particularly difficult once you've learned the area, but the area is probably the most spaghetti-like of any of the sims. I recall, when the first scrolly sims were released (the Western set), people said: "ooh, when can the other sims be scrollified" - and it was quickly explained that Sheffield's map is so complex, it is actually much more straightforward to leave it paged. It was the last sim to be released in the "paged sims only" days, and (I believe) was developed more-or-less alongside Trent, which is much harder to play despite having a much simpler route network.

There are a few medium-to-large sims which were originally paged but converted to scrolly - all of the Western sims apart from Gloucester, for example; and Kings Cross.

Actually, I'd think it would be much simpler in scrolly - just have the mainline and the Barrow Hill Goods parallel to eachother. What would be fun is working out Tinsley Yard - which would supposedly be vertical to fit between the two lines (actually, three lines at that point, as there's a parallel route past Tinsley's north end), a rather unacceptable situation!

That is the problem really - lots of things in SimSig have to be done on the horizontal. Somewhere on the old forums is a sketch I did trying to work out how it could be laid out: it ends up a mess.

In Windows Vista, you can find the .SSG files in C:\Program Files\Simsig\[name of sim] . Use Windows Explorer, browse to the sim folder, then click on the label "Compatability Files" to see the list of Snapshots. Copy the snapshots to another folder if you want to save them from being overwritten.
