How to uninstall a particular sim? 18/11/2011 at 09:09 #23202

Searched Wiki and Forum with no result. My C:\Program Files\Simsig now has 8 pairs of numbered uninstall files (unins001.exe + unins001.dat, etc.) but I can't figure out which one corresponds to which sim. I don't want to attack SimSig using a general uninstaller app. How's it done? Thanks.

(Running Windows 7 Home Premium)

I just select the [Sim].exe and press delete.

I use the "Programs and Features" Control Panel applet - they should be listed there like any other application, individually.

I use Vista and have had no problem in setting up to install and delete sims or timetables. I just do it the same way as you Peter.

It seems to me that you have some competancy and knowledge of computers so I'm a bit surprised that you have this difficulty; or are you finding problems for the sake of it?

If you can figure out which uninst*.exe is for the particular sim, execute it.

(For me I would use the control panel applet too)

If I were you, I would just keep the sim in the computer. It isn't so much big, at max 3MB, isn't it?

With all the information in the Wiki about how to install SimSig, I was hoping that by now someone would have included the recommended way to uninstall a Sim instead of leaving us guessing. What I was really hoping to find was a little shortcut on the Programs and Files list below each sim under the SimSig umbrella that said "Uninstall" which when clicked would invoke the appropriate uninsxxx.exe file, as many other apps do. I was reluctant simply to delete the [sim name].exe file, as that would have left behind the uninstallation and data files and goodness knows what other rubbish in the Registry and Application Data folders, which it should not have to fall to me to hunt down and delete. Unfortunately each sim folder does not contain all the sim files, otherwise I could simply have deleted the folder.

So as a result of the ensuing discussion, here's what to do. To uninstall SimSig or any of its sims in Windows 7, click Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features, which brings up the Uninstall or change a program window. End of story and thanks to everyone who responded.

Which you probably knew that all along....

I know you regard me as a vexatious person, but I'm not, really. I might just as well have asked "Is there a recommended way of uninstalling a sim?" but on this occasion I didn't. In fact it's a while since I used the Uninstall applet on my Win 7 machine (more used to XP) so having had to look up the pathway to it, I thought I'd post it for anyone else who comes along. In fact, now that I'm sure this is the correct way to go about it I'll even add it to the Wiki to save others the drudgery of having to trawl through the Forum.

Why are you so surprised? Many programs don't have uninstall icons. SimSig isn't different from, I suspect, many applications you probably have on your machine.

Incidentally, my understanding is that with Windows Installer technology, Microsoft actually recommend you DO NOT create uninstall icons with your application.

I wasn't aware of that but you're correct. I think whether or not one agrees with Microsoft's advice depends on one's computer habits. I use the Start Menu when I need to find an app I don't often use, though I keep shortcuts to the sims I play most often on the Desktop itself. As a result I know where everything is on the Start Menu, so including Uninstall icons would be helpful to me. However, we don't really need them.

I'm not a great fan of Windows' Add-Remove programs, or "Programs and Features" in Windows 7 (why did they have to change the name?) since it takes longer to get to it from the Start button and there's no guarantee that the app you wish to remove will be listed there, nor that it will be removed entirely (I'd rather use Revo Uninstaller).

However, in SimSig's case Microsoft's applet appears to work cleanly and the individual sims listed in the applet are all prefaced with the word "SimSig", which keeps them all together.
