I have a train (3Z11 on Derby 2015-04-08 SX) scheduled from Derby CS to Derby RTC (via DWAWS). Is this even possible? If so, how?

My guess is 'CS' should read 'CL' for 'Connecting Line'. Route the train DML - Connecting - DGL (rev behind DY448 GPL) - Connecting Line - Derby RTC (Research Sdg (known colloquially as "in at 418", a reference to the exit signal number).

If you have done your job correctly though and phoned the RTC first the shunter may want it to enter via the P.Way Sdg (otherwise known as "in at 423"), in which case you'll need to reverse 3Z11 in the station, platform 1, 2 or 3.

There isn't a signalled move to either RTC entrance from the Station Yard.

Does it go to the P-Way siding or the Research siding?

Just as in real life trains just show Derby RTC so when you ring the shunter (which is also a real life requirement) he will tell you which entrance to send it into.

As it happens I've just started a Derby sim using the 2015-04-08 TT, and have just had a test train returning to the RTC enter from Lichfield. When I went to call the RTC to advise him of the approaching train I noticed that where there used to be just one call option (Derby RTC) there are now two, Research and P.Way.

I seem to recall that when the original Derby sim was released trains were timed to either RTC exit point but there was also a note in the manual that you were to ring the RTC shunter for permission to send a train in (which is prototypical) regardless of which entrance it was timed into and route it to whichever entrance you were instructed by the shunter (also prototypical), and also to make that phone call before the train got beyond the point (St Marys Jn/Way & Works Jn/LNW Jn) where it could no longer be routed to either entrance , again also prototypical. This instruction I notice is missing from the current sim manual.

Splitting the RTC into two locations for phone calls is incorrect for two reasons:-
1. The entire yard is under the control of one shunter (with other shunters assisting in the yard but only the shunter in charge communicates with the box), and
2. Having you the player getting to choose which entrance to phone to send a train in at (at least for the 2015 TT where they are all booked to exit at 'Derby RTC' ) is not prototypical for the reason outlined above.

The method of working between the box and the RTC was as follows:-
When the signalman called the RTC shunter he would advise him of the whereabouts of the train (eg "just approaching/passing Wichnor/Borrowash/Wingfield"). The shunter would state which entrance to send the train in at ("Send him in at 418/423) and the signalman would route accordingly at St Marys Jn/Way & Works Jn/LNW Jn. The other reason the box would ring the shunter with trains still so far away was because if the yard could not accept a train straight away it gave the signalmen options to loop trains as early as Burton or Broadholme to await acceptance. Could a random refusal to accept a train be built into the responses the shunter gives when you request permission for a train? Having spent enough time that I won't get back sat on trains on the Up Goods at Burton and Clay Mills and in Sunnyhill UGL, Broadholme Loop, and some years ago a marathon 3-hr wait on the Up Goods at St Mary's I can testify that it is not an uncommon occurrence if the yard is busy.

For the sake of realism and prototypical operation I would like to see the phone call options revert to just the one (Derby RTC) as is prototypical and have the instruction reinstated in the manual to place your call requesting permission before the approaching train passes any of the three 'options cutoff points' listed above. The way phone calls to the RTC were set up in the original sim version allowed it to be worked in this way and was thus as close to prototypical as it was possible to get. The current version does not, and it is therefore not realistic or prototypical.

Just another thought regarding realism at Derby RTC, specifically RTC arrivals during the time the yard is closed.

In real life, Derby RTC Yard is unmanned/closed from 2300 to 0600 each weekday night (hours vary at weekends), but it is permissible to set the yard up for one 'unattended arrival' at each of the two entrances for trains due to arrive during the time the yard is closed. Once two trains have arrived unattended no more trains can enter the yard until the shunter has opened the yard and the two unattended arrivals have been moved clear from each of the two entrances. Any further trains for the RTC are required to be held out at any of the various loops until the RTC Yard can accept them.

Maybe a note could be added to the manual to reflect this so that those players wishing to hone their regulating skills could apply this little bit of added realism to the sim if they wish to.

Considering all skill levels, if the player phones the yard and is given an exit point which cannot be reached from the current position of the train, then they're snookered. It's fine how it is.

That's why, as I stated in my earlier post, you ring the RTC when trains are still a good way out, while you still have the option of routing to either entrance. It is simply about the timing of the phone call, which any player should be able to manage regardless of 'skill level'.

As it is now it is not 'fine as it is', it is neither realistic nor prototypical.
