Problems with hosting via Mobile Broadband Dongle 20/11/2011 at 00:32 #23322

Hello

Just a question.

I've recently decided to try hosting via a broadband dongle but to no avail.

Many fiddles about with settings later and I still find i'm unable to host.

Has anyone had problems like this or know a way around hosting via this method? It does work when I used landline (fixed) broadband on other machines.

Any help will be greatfully received

Thanks , Mark

I cant see how this would be possible the software on the dongle would be designed to get you onto the web and I have not seen any software which will allow the port forwarding on incoming connections, added to this many mobile providers use a proxy service which is not designed for what you want to do, whilst you may be able to get connections from others within the mobile providers network you are unlikely to be able to be seen from the outside world.

My 3 Mifi also has the same issue with not being able to forward the ports on it.

I'll work out something , i'm sure there's a way round it. Failing that , I'm sure I can have a sub host if needed.

There is no way around it, no mobile broadband devices I have used let you forward ports, and no forwarded ports means no hosting.

Port forwarding is only needed if you have a router or firewall. A broadband dongle is neither a router or a firewall so you won't have any options to set it up. Dongles are designed for you to access the internet not to be used to host a server. I doubt you find a way round it directly.

A mifi is a router although it does not seem to allow port forwarding. It can however be used for LAN games. (train to the tap on Saturday anyone?)

Taking a one-sentence definition of a router, my old 28.8kb modem qualified but that doesn't compare with a WiFi router. So whether a MiFi is a router or not isn't really of any significance as the question is about what the device is capable of, not what family of product it belongs to.

In any case, a quick Google shows that it depends on the device as some clearly do manage it. Whether that port forwarding and device itself is suitable for hosting is another issue entirely.

That's interesting because when I tried to host using my Orange Dongle it would not work and I had to give up.

What model do you have?

I think i'll get someone to host on my behalf then. If i can't host on a dongle then i'll source someone who will oblige. That'll save problems.
