License Manager 23/11/2011 at 23:42 #23533

This page, on the wiki has caught my interest.

"I have a PC and a laptop. Do I need two licenses? Yes, but the second license will be significantly cheaper - in some cases, free."

This bit is concerning me a little, don't get me wrong I don't have a problem with the licensing (Well depending on price). I wouldn't say I'm an average Simsig user, not in terms of hardware. I have a main Desktop PC, a laptop that goes with me practically everywhere, but I also have a couple of other desktops that I play SimSig on, and use them to host different sims.

Do I really have to buy a license for each machine? Could I suggest a system like Steam / Minecraft use. A launcher style application where I log in with my credentials, and allows me to play all the sims I have purchased? Just seems a little bit easier to me.

EDIT

This also gets around the issue of having to unlock the license each time a hard drive dies. Which is a surprisingly common occurrence.

I am much in the same boat as Karl.
I live both in the UK and Dubai and travel with a laptop so this would suggest I require three licenses to ensure I can play a sim.

Obviously its too late to ask for an alternate way of doing this as its written (I assume) but does this really mean im having to install it and purchase three licenses.

Do we know the cost of the license ? Or is there a range depending on the sim.

The primary purpose of the license is to protect BETA sims from hijacking but all bases are covered and it will be for individual developers to decide what he want to do with it in the bigger picture.

It is possible to use a single license on more than one computer provided you log the license back into base (as it were) then log it back out onto a different computer. Perhaps that point needs to be made clearer in that line, though it is explained more fully below.

I'm afraid to say as a teenager that doesnt have any source of income or have a bank card etc, i cannot pay the leicense for the sims, as of course i'd want them all. Fair enough developers and other people in the SimSig world are putting alot of their time and effort into making/producing these sims and we all congratulate and thank you for that. I find it hard to say but i don't think that many people will buy these, Especially if its one price per sim. This will lead to some people having some sims and other people having other sims wich will lead to problems getting people to play hosted games. If say a host has Cambridge and some people want to play but don't have it and want a game that the host hasn't got, this will create problems. With regret when this happens and i cannot get on these sims i will not be able to play or host any sims.

im the same as are a few of the SimSig forum id imagine as teenagers we cant just ask our parents ``can we `borrow' £x for a license for simulation x'' now most parents in the current economical state wouldnt be able to afford it

kyle also saidQuote:

it depends on how much a sim would be, but i guess that it would depend on the amount of work that went into the sim

kyle also added Quote:

as a host myself i can see this will cause no end of problems for example if i wanted to host a game of simulation x which i had purchased but most of the regular multiplayers didnt have the funds etc to buy that license the multiplayer games will be so depleted (not many) in client numbers.

I'd suggest or in-fact urge that everyone just waits and sees what happens. Of note is the fact that the Wiki page Karl has linked to says Quote:
This is not needed for the free simulations
and Quote:
some developers wish to receive some compensation for their time and effort.
, both of which imply to me that not all simulations are going to be 'commercial', it would be up to the developer.

Peter, Thanks for the explanation, it does make sense.

I think we will just have to wait and see what the first paid sims will be, and for their cost. It does make sense that some will be going this way. After all many other software companies charge £20 upwards for a sim and we have so many which have been free so far.

I have no objection paying for a license, my concern was that additional machines would be an additional cost.

If somebody can think of a way to allow licenses for further computers without people giving the "spare" licenses to friends for free then I'm all ears.

Geoff, how would this work for someone like me, who's only Windows machine - and the one I use SimSig on - is not connected to the internet at all?

Trying to think of everything - while protecting genuine users, limiting piracy, and minimising hassle. It's not an easy balance! No phoning home, except an initial registration, before anybody asks.

I can imagine it's not an easy balance. It's a pity that there is a need to have a license manager anyway - was the introduction related to the situation with a certain user who didn't like how things were run a while ago?

One of several who don't appear to have any respect for priviliged limited distribution of alpha simulations unfortunately.
