The era depicted in the 95/96 Saltley TT is interesting for a lot of people myself included because it's a time of great changes to the Railway that once was with privatisation just coming in and still reasonable levels of traffic about. It also provides a good MP challenge once things get going in the morning

During this period there was alot of changes on the freight side where not only did you have freight trains running from originating points to destination points that had rarely been if ever used before, but also the allocation of traction units radically changed as well once the freight companies had been privatized. I worked at this time at Stratford ROC as duty Manager for Trainload freight South East which in turn became Mainline Freight. We had the biggest changes in the allocation of work to traction units especially with Cl.58s. Since there introduction in 1983 they were used almost totally for MGR traffic n the East Midlands with a smaller number working from the West Midlands9approx. 12 locos) & another small batch working from Knottingley in West Yorkshire (approx. the same number 12) albeit at separate times of there working life. When Trainload freight South East/Mainline Freight inherited the fleet they were then sent to Stratford, Hither Green, Hoo Junction, Eastleigh, Acton, Swindon & Westbury for those drivers to be trained on them. this meant that these locos were now working in parts of the country & on traffic flows they were never used on before. So from a train-spotters perspective this was a big thumbs up. When Freightliner split from Railfreight Distribution (RfD), they inherited the worst of the Cl.47s & as a result freightliner had to hire in additional motive power from other companies. In the finish they hired in about 6 Cl.56s off Loadhaul as they'd originally requested from mainline Freight the hire of Cl.58s, but as we couldn't apre any they were forced to use Cl.56s. Also we used to send Cl.33s & Cl.73s on the weekly Eastleigh ferry turns to Toton TMD where they used to drag failed Cl.58s back to Toton & pick up replacements. Eastleigh drivers actually learned the route to Toton via Landor Street Jn. I remember taking some photos of MGR trains bound for West Burton & Cottam Power Stations originating from Liverpool Bulk Terminal, which was a new one in the terms of MGR workings back in 1996/97.
Glad to see that there is still a large number of users who prefer the timetables of the 1970s. 1980s & 1990s compared to the modern era something I was getting concerend about as the majority of multiplayer sessions seem only to host the modern era.

My personal preference is for the mid 80's and 90's timetables as I think it was a much more interesting railway then. Not just from the variety of freight traffic, including local trip workings, but also because Signalmen were able to regulate traffic without the fear of O codes and the related performance regime.

Yes they might get a Please Explain if they made a particularly poor regulating decision but they weren't answering the phone constantly to explain to delay attribution clerks (who are of course just doing their job) why a train had lost 3 minutes between two timing points.

While I know some Signalmen still do their best to regulate traffic and give early running freight a chance they can come unstuck if a colleague hundreds of miles away makes a poor decision with the same train hours later.

I do get Steamers point though regarding Multi Player for some areas as while the traffic was more interesting there was less of it. It will be interesting to see how the load is split across New Street when Pascal releases a 1988 version.

Also in some cases there aren't any early era options available to download just now. I'm trying to help there with a Pre-Electrification 1985 Paisley WTT which I hope to complete soon. This includes a lot of Local Trip Workings based on the notice for the period.

You wouldn't be the 1st person to say that Gareth. Whilst communicating with the Chairman of the Cl.37 Locomotive Group several months back I mentioned to him a photo of 37008 sitting inside Stratford B&C shed following its destruction when it was the leading loco working 4S83 Tilbury - Coatbridge FLT back in 1993. I told him that the photo sent a shiver down my spine when I saw it as it brought back memories of the incident as I was the senior Traction controller on duty at Liverpool Street Regional Control Office when the collision occurred & I was the last person on BR to allocate that locomotive on its last working. He asked me to write an article for there magazine on the incident. Problem is memory as I can't quite remember the straford drivers name who was driving the train to Willesden. The shunters at Seabrook Sdgs had been shunting an empty freightliner 5 set & had left it on the running line without any tail lamps on it. So 4S83 departing SSeabrooks Sdgs the driver couldn't see this empty 5 set until it was too late. Both Cl.37s(the other one being 37225 IIRC) where under power as they were starting rom a standing start & when 4s83 came round the bend that's when the driver noticed the 5 set. Fortunately for him the fact that he was driving from a Cl.37/0 which had a nose on it saved his life as the freightliner 5 set reared up & went straight through the cab of the leading locomotive. Another BR employee who I worked with a few years later & he himself became a loco controller when we were at Doncaster heard the collision & was one of the first on the scene to render the driver assistance & was later given a commendation for his actions. The locomotive was subsequently removed to Stratford TMD & eventually they removed the fuel tanks from it which in turn made it out of guage & as a result the loco was removed to Tinsley for scrapping by road. 37008 was a favorite amongst the Cl.37 fraternity. Below is a photo of the same loco in happier times taken 5 years before the incident at March Whitemoor Junction working 6Y97 0725 SLK Whitemoor - Bury St. Edmunds conveying scrap metal to King's scrapyard at Snailwell. Little did I know when I took this picture that I'd be involved with this engine in the way I was on that day 5 years later.

Moonraker talking about this Saltley 1995-1996 timetable, I've been doing some more work on this tt today & now I've completed adding UIDs & some editing to all the Cl.5 trains. So starting tomorrow I'll be tackling the Cl.6s & so on so not too far to go now. However I've re-examined te WTT & 1M80 doesn't terminate at Stratford Upon Avon, it is actually booked through to Henley In Arden where the train then runs ECS to Tyseley T&RSMD. So I've altered both 1M80 & 5M80 to take this into account if you want to amend your version of the tt if you are running it through.

Thanks for your recollections of 37008 Pascal, I was a secondman at Stratford from 79-84 so this happened long after i left but my mate, who is now a driver at Norwich and was a secondman at Stratford he may know the driver of 4S83 if you want me to ask him. Looking forward to the new 1995-1996 TT, i've modified the old one to run into certain missing locations and added loco numbers to each loco hauled train which adds a bit of interest.

In that case you'll know some of the people I can remember. driver Freddie Featherstone who later became TCS at Stratford under Mainline Freight & I remember Ted Kenny who was a TCS at Stratford when I was in the Regional Control. I remember trainspotting at Stratford in the early 1980s & from the station you could see a line of Cl.03 shunter lined up outside B&C shed as well as the usual Cl.31s, Cl.37s & Cl.47s. With Stratford DRS the place was quite a large depot. I remember not long after starting work at Liverpool Street RCO I was sent down to Stratford TMD to meet the maintenance shift foreman & also the TCSs as I'd be speaking to them regualrly in the course of my duties as Senior Traction Controller. I took my video camera with me & when I'd finished going around B&C Shed I went across into the DRS & starting filming 47572 'Ely Cathedral' as that was the last loco having a CEM at Stratford Works & it was being lowered onto its bogie ashte loco was raised on Matteson jacks. I hadn't been filming inside the workshop for more than 1 minute when this voice shouted & this chap came rushing down the stairs who was in an office above the shop floor & wanted to know who I was & what I was doing there. He must have thought I was a trespasser who sneaked it. When I explained who I was & that I'd been sent down from the Regional Control they let me carry on filming. I was very surprised at the short amount of time it took for someone to challenge me. Today you wouldn't even know that that whole complex had been there.
This photo was taken from the car park at Stratford LIFT where the Regional Ops centre for Mainline Freight was before we moved to Nottingham. Photo shows 47572 passing Channelsea Curve Jn on its way towards Temple Mills East with an ECS working during some altered workings whereby trains were terminating & starting from Stratford due to engineering work between Stratford & Liverpool Street on 150495.

To be honest I don't really have the time as that is spent writing timetables for various SimSig sims & I don't really have the inclination either as I don't post on any other site other than this one. The original photo of 37008 inside Stratford B&C Shed after the collision was on a Facebook Group called BROS (British Rail Old School) where alot of us ex BR personnel had joined along with other people who took photos of trains during that period. The chap who took it asked me if I wanted it removing as it brough back memories of the incident but I said no leave it & in any event I did take a photo of the loco when it was covered in a tarpaulin awaiting movement by road from Stratford TMD, but since then I've lost that photo. If you went looked on that Group you may still see the photo in question, but as I haven't used Facebook for about 3 years or more. I suppose we could always create a thread on this forum specializing in the 1970s, 1980s & 1990s eras only & no modern era chat. Some of the sotories I remember are funny & some not so funny.
I was on duty on night shift when there was that collision at Heck with that car towing a trailer that went down a railway embankment & a southbound GNER service hit that wreckage & in the process that train derailed & was hit by a Freightliner Heavy Haul loaded coal train travelling on the DOWN. As the loco controller covering the Yorkshire/Humberside & East Midlands region I had to call the Shift Maintenance Engineer at Toton to get the breakdown crane manned & I subsequently allocated a Cl.60 on the depot to take the BDVs to Doncaster & await further instructions. The worst part of that for me was the death of Barry Needham who was a coal controller who sat opposite me on another set of desks. He lived at York & was married with 2 children & was traveling to work on that train. Sadly he never made it. Alot of the staff at the CSDC at Doncaster petitioned the management about naming a locomotive after him & a short time later 56115 was named Barry Needham. I can still see his face now & that for me is themost vidi memory of that incident as I worked closly with him due to the majority of locos I was controlling were working MGR trains & as a coal controller they were his trains I was providing power to work. Some stories are best left not told.

Had to make a separate timetable for 1M80R from Stratford on Avon to Henley in Arden. When I tried to validate it with the Henley stop added to the original train it said no path from Leamington to Henley so made up a new train 1M80R2 and amended 5M80R to start from Henley terminating at Tyseley CS via Shirley.

Yes I remember Freddie Featherstone & Ted Kenny, I was on Jack Stannards shift, always gave you a few engines to prep or join together before you went home, that's if he was in a good mood after winning at cards...otherwise it would all be done nearer your going home time. I did pen a piece for Traction magazine about my time at Stratford, it made 3 issues but I don't remember writing that much!! Not sure if you were around in the early 80's when a 08 pilot ran into some freightliner flats left on a departure road at Temple Mills without a tail light on, the flats crushed the cab of the 08 killing, I believe 3 of the 4 loco men on board, a sad loss.

For those of you specifically interested in this timetable. I have just sent it for moderator approval following the run through of the timetable kindly hosted by Tony Francis to which some of you have joined in. Tony finished the timetable last night & found no further issues. The 2 main issues found were:-
1. 1E30A & 1E30B entered the sim at Birmingham New Street after the service entered as booked from stoke Works Jn. I've changed the rules & hopefully now that should be resolved.
2. The other main issue is regarding the run round at Stratford Upon Avon on one of the charter trains. I've altered the consist of the VSOE to 175m instead of 195m as before (reducing the length of the train by 1 coach), so hopefully now that should work.

If there is a problem with the run round at Stratford Ipon Avon or anything else for that matter please mention it on this thread & I'll amend the tt as soon as possible. I've added in all the loco depot codes & Loco Pools to the Freight Operating Companies (FOCs). Most of the MGR trains now run as alternatives so you can get either Cl.56+32HAAs or Cl.60+32 HAAs working the Transrail services to & from daw Mill Colliery or Cl.58+32 HAAs or Cl.60+32 HAAs on Mainline Freight MGR services from Daw Mill colliery to make the tt a bit more realistic reafrding the varied traction types used on these trains.
During this period Freightliner which had recently separated from Railfreight Distribution (RfD) & as a result ended up with the worst of the fleet of Cl.47s. This resulted in poor performance levels on Freightliner services & as a result whilst they sent there Cl.47s away for major overhauls they approached Mainline Freight & asked to hire approx. 6 Cl.58s to work there services between Felixstowe FLT terminals - Ipswich. They tested it with a Cl.58 & the loco proved to be alot better at working these trains than anyone expected. Unfortunately we at Mainline Freight were unable to let any go on hire as they were all needed to cover duties already allocated to them. As a result freightliner ended up hiring 6 Cl.56 locos from Loadhaul from Thornaby TMD. These locos were booked to all freightliner services to & from Ipswich - Felixstowe FLT terminals as well as Freightliner service to Wilton & Lawley street FLT. Therefore you will notice in the train description for the train to & from lawley street FLT '(O/H DFLT TE Cl.56) which basically means that loco is On Hire to DFLT pool. Those of us on the loco controls when we hired out locos to other companies for whatever period of time the hire was for the original loco pool of that loco changed on TOPS to the loco pool of the Company who has hired it so the Loadhaul Cl.56 On Hire to Freightliner was shown in the DFLT pool which was Freightliners Cl.47 Crewe Diesel Pool of locos. Below is a list of traction pools for the period, but these did change regularly & frequently.

Had a couple of hours of Sim time on this just now. Only comment so far is that it clearly has the meticulous attention to detail that come with Pascal's timetables! The Lawley Street pilot coming and going and having to bell through for permission every time quickly loses its novelty :P

Very enjoyable so far.

Odd, I had no problems with the reversals at either location.

There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

7Z01-4 should be routed up slow to Kings Norton then to the first signal on the Camp Hill line, pull off the dummy behind to the A & D line and then to the spur. Once in the spur set the road in to the OTP depot, don't forget to re-impose the train description on the A & D line or you'll get **** and forget what it is

The timing point is Sig 529 reverse so you have to send it on the up camp hill towards lifford east jn and then reverse as above.
