Hello all, I was talking to someone yesterday about the starter signal at Platform 6 at Cardiff Central (Queen Street end), in that the route indicator box shows 'L'. I was asked what does L stand for and, well to be honest, I have no idea. Does anyone know what it means? L to me would stand out as Lethwick Loop, but that's at the opposite Barry end. Also what would the box display if routed over the hardly used mainline connection, just either UR or UM? (I think it's relief lines they use, or is it Slow lines?) Cheers, James. Log in to reply |

The line to Newport goes underneath the line to Cardiff Queen Street. To that end, 'L' could mean something like 'Lower'? Trains towards Queen Street might get a 'U' indication for 'Upper' as they go onto a bridge taking them over the line towards Newport? Again a shot in the dark but 'Llandaf' perhaps, to indicate the route set through Queen Street and onto the Llandaf line?

Are you referring to C425/435 (I forget which) James? If so, the 'L' in the theatre box is for Llandaf Jn - 'U' cannot be used as both routes from those signals are to up Lines. Nor can 'B' (for Up Barry) be used as Barry can be reached from either end of the platforms. The route to the Down Relief from each gives an 'R', no route exists to the Up Main, that instead is achieved on a Pos1 Feather at C127, the next signal toward London. Older MAS installations (and newer TBH) avoid multi-character theatre boxes like plauge. Too complicated, too much to go wrong and too expensive. Log in to reply |
