We are in discussion witrh Network Rail about the plans for the Basingstoke to Exeter resignalling and in reply NR say
'Cabling to Basingstoke is not a problem as FTN is being installed this year for the whole line as part of a separate project.'
Can anyone enlighten me as to the meaning of FTN?

This is also the fibre optic backbone of the GSM-R (Global System Moile - Railway) communications, will will link the UK rail network with the Stoke and Didcot Control Centres (plus future ETCS - European Train Control Systems).

The railways have always enjoyed using abreviation.
