I think what has been said so far by various persons with regard to what should or should not be expected to be run at a meet goes to show that different people have different expectations.
Some of those expectations revolve around the new still in test sims and as to when they will be available to others who are not involved with its development or did not get chance to get a preview of things to come at a meet.
In my opinion I think those expectations and hopes of a new sim appearing seem to be increased because of people seeing unreleased sims being brandished around on the forum and even testers advertising multiplay chained sims being played by the few. You only have to look at recent topics on the forum pages to see last night Saltley being chained with unreleased Derby. Whilst I am not saying that this should not be the case, in order to test the sims out and make sure the released sim is as good as it could be, it certainly contributes to peoples expectations and possible frustrations. Am I correct in saying that it must be only testers doing this multi play chaining?
I seem to remember that on the old forum there was a facility for postings by testers only and could that not be the case now. This might not alert Joe Bloggs like me to the fact that these sims are available to some now or may well be soon to me.
I as well as others now know that Leicester and West Hampstead are in the melting pot and no doubt those with other expectations might well now pinpoint those with their hopes and comments and requests of when will it be ready.
As for me I recognise that what is being done here to give me hours of enjoyment is greatly appreciated and as for my expectations, well I wait with eager anticipation but know that it will be ready when its ready.

There is a separate tester area on the forum, what I think you maybe reading for the most part are posting from people who got a copy at a meeting rather than testers per-se. I appreciate that may open a whole can of worms in itself, on which I offer no comment, but that's my understanding of how you come to see postings that you do see.

If official testers are making the posts you refer to then they should not be doing so for the reasons you set out.

To point out I received the copy of Derby at the London 2011 meet. As for only hosting a sim that a few people can play see this..

I went to the London 2006 meet, which I believe was the first ever meet with laptops. I went because I wanted to meet the people involved with SimSig, and put some names to faces. I also wanted the opportunity to play SimSig with people sitting next to me, rather than typing over the internet. Everyone who attended that meet went for those very reasons. There may well have been sims in development then which are now a staple of current players sessions, but back then we just set up a KX/PBO/CAM chain. The secretive element of sims in development I think was a good thing, because no-one had any expectations for any sneak-peeks.

Now it seems like a fair portion of the SimSig user base see meets as only worth going to for such a peek at unreleased material. I wonder what happened to people meeting up with old friends, meeting internet friends in real life, and having the opportunity to make some new friends. I still enjoy playing a simulation much more when physically sitting next to the adjacent signaller, rather than using some form of internet communication to pass information (Even if this is starting to bear too much similarity to work!). These are the reasons I go to as many meets as I can. I've only missed 2 in 6 years, excluding the very first [non-laptop] meet which was before I found SimSig.

I, personally, think that if this expectation for new sims is common, then maybe it's time for sims in development to go back into hiding...

Same here mate, but my first was London 2011. It was great to put names to faces in 2011, and even better to interact more at March 2012. Essentially, I almost felt a bit more welcomed into the community. In agreement with the part about playing Simsig with people next to me as well. Me and Guy were discussing various switches at Potters Bar (Palace and Welwyn panels) to improve efficiency.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but many of the posts in this topic talking about new sims, aren't necessarily talking about in development sims. There are some sims that are not played very often that would have been perfect for a meet where no "sneak-peeks" or similar were happening.

I think a lot of people have agreed that the sheer cost of a meet sometimes outweighs the benefits. As an example, I spent in the region of £40-50 last week to go to the meet, yes I enjoyed it, yes I put names to faces etc., but I was still playing some of the most overplayed sims that have been created. Is that a testament to their quality? Yes. To the work that has been put into them? Yes. All of the released sims are up to a high standard of quality that could have easily been used at the meet that aren't played as often. This would have satisfied most people. Those who have gone to the meet to run a panel alongside other signallers, and also those who have gone for the more social side of it.

If i'm going to be honest, as much as I enjoyed the meet, would I pay £50 to play Kings Cross again? I doubt it. Would I have paid the same to play a less played sim such as South Humberside? Quite possibly.

Those going or who are minded to go, could have a poll of the available Sims and see what people might like to have played.

that sounds good to me, would there also be a poll for timetables? personally my vote would for instance be a 70s/80s timetable, however if the majority would prefer a 2009 one then fairs fair.

The person who sets the poll can decide the question.
