I'm back into timetabling mode again and trying to get hold of some working timetables (WTT's) for a sim (not telling you which one yet!) and thought I'd got the info I needed for 0.99p off an eBay auction. I did ask the question to the seller to confirm the area that it covered but no answer and so and went ahead and bought it anyway. Turns out that it only partially covers the area I require. It does help as the sectional line diagram shows the adjacent sections which I need to cover the sim. The question I have is "Does anyone know if there is a complete listing available of all the Section Codes and the areas that they cover"? I have tried surfing the tinternet but not been able to find one. I know for instance that for earlier timetables e.g. prior to 1970 sectional codes were duplicated e.g. you could have for example a PA area for North Western and also a PA for Western areas just to confuse things! I know the answer will probably be 'trial and error' or look at other listings/booksellers etc. but if there is a summary of them out there would sure be appreciated.
Is anyone aware of such a thing?

You may have already discounted this, but British Railway Books have a section devoted to WTTs, listed by region. For each region there is a matrix listing by date the Passenger and Freight TTs available. If you click on any individual entry in the matrix, the description which opens includes the code (e.g. 1989 - 1990 ECML Passenger and Parcel WTT shows "Section YA" when the entry is clicked). Makes it a 2-step process, but the information is fairly easy to access.

Just makes me regret the number of WTTs I ditched from work in the 1990's when I see the prices quoted!

You can get most of the way here:
http://britishrailwaybooks.co.uk/wtt/wtt.php
The links are named by the sectional code, and in most cases there's a scan of the line map giving you the neighbouring ones

Random example for area WA:

I know Gary who runs British Railways Books very well & by far he has the best collection of WTTs & other railway related publications. He has sent me a load of his business cards, so I will dish them out to whoever wants them at the Wakefield meet. I get the WTTs I need for timetable creating from him if I haven't got them in my collection. Likewise Postal, looking back over my railway career if only I had kept all the stuff I had been issued with. Some of the prices are unbelieveable. I went into the loft at my mothers house at the end of January & stumbled across a suitcase full of railway publications dating from 1985 omwards. Some of which hadn't seen the light of day since 1988. Included in the find s were 2 copies of London Midland Region Control Manuals dating from 1987. I knew I had them somewhere but couldn't remember where I'd left them until I stumbled across this suitcase. The wardrobe at home now is full of WTTs & other railway publications, so many in fact I've had to take out all of the clothing in wardrobe & them somewhere else.

Thanks JG and Bill for info and link.
58050 - I'm also looking for some rare 'railwaymen career' type books that have so far I have failed to locate so Gary might just might be able to assist. As for piles of old WTT's I was under instructions from she who must be obeyed to 'make room and get rid of that rubbish' and consequently dumped a lot on eBay a few years ago which went for pennies. Ohhh the benefit of hindsight!

What 'railwaymen career' type books are you after Quizman? I know Gary wants me to send him a list of what WTTs & aother publications I have in my collection, & hopefully before next weekend I will be able to send him a complete listings, afyer emptying my wardrobe of such items. Some items are very hard to come by & as a result it is very awkward to complete a timetable which is in effect 100% accurate. I must have approx. 60+ WTTs ranging from the early 1970s right up to 2007, both Mandatory, Conditional, Freight, Passenger & Parcels trains. Also I must have about a dozen Sectional Appendix's - LMR(north & south), Eastern region(north & south) & Scottish Region all late 1980s. Freight train Loading Books I have about a sozen of those from 1968 through to 1996 covering London Midland, Eastern, Western, Anglia & Southern Regions, I use these to calculate the length of trains when creating a tt for SimSig, along with a number of Working Manuals for Rail Staff which give details of various wagons.

One in particular which I have been looking for is 'Laira Footplateman' possibly by Pat English. It is quoted in a local (Plymouth) historical web site but I have been unable to find out any more info not least the publisher. Not to be confused with 'Laira Fireman' by Phil Rundell which was published in 2009. If Gary can check any ISBN listings to ascertain whether it exists (or not) or even has a copy would be appreciated.
