My niece had a stroke at age two and has recently had a brain operation to remove half her brain. Her parents are now raising funds to take her to disneyworld after all the trauma they have all been through. I am a signaller at West Hampstead PSB and thought I could raise some money for them by offering a tour of the box.

Could anyone interested reply to this so I can get an idea of the level of interest in a visit.

Thanks all :-)

I would be very interested in a visit, especially if it is going to a very good cause.

The tour would be on one of my rest days. I will give a tour of each panel with plenty of time to ask questions and take photos. I will make sure there is time to observe the panels after the tour.

I am also considering a couple of places for you to come to work with me for a shift :-). Maybe two people with me for half a shift each. As this is to raise money, maybe an auction for those two places with a fixed amount for the tour?

I'm also interested. As TRC666 said above, this sounds like a good cause.

Of interest to SimSig users would be St.Pacras as that is a WestCad system :-). Our panel 1 recently closed and is now an extra screen on WestCad.

I used SimSig for a couple of years. When I was made redundant as a software engineer, my SimSig use led me to apply to Network Rail :-).

Hello,

I would also be very interested in this. I have two nieces, one of which is only 16 months and I can't imagine the amount of upset having something like that happen must generate, especially for the immediate family.

Sounds like a good trip with the funds going to a good cause.

James

Let's be clear here: Ray wants to raise money for a damn good cause and this is not some "yeah, I'd visit" kind of trip. I would even suggest auctioning off the places to the highest bidder(s) on that basis. Not always a popular idea for students and those on low incomes but come on guys, this is a kid with serious health issues right on our doorstep and we have the collective power to do something about it. So let's do it. Not for wanting to visit a signalbox but for wanting to help somebody.

Although I'm too far away to join a visit, I would be more than happy to make a contribution (and I've no doubt that there will be a few more in the same situation).

Could Ray post information about how we can get a donation to him if we are unable to take part in the visit, please.

We are in touch with Ray to discuss the logistics etc- this was just a interest gathering exercise and further information will be posted as and when things are firmed up.

Add me to the interested list... apart from being involved with St Albans South i used to spend a lot of time up Midland Main Line boxes in the days when you could get away with such things so I'd love to see the modern equivalent.

One question: would Ray (and probably NR too) be amenable to photos being displayed at St Albans South? (It's not nearly such a good cause as his but it is technically a charity so I'd hope my request would be sympathetically treated.)

Even though this is one signalbox I have previously visited with FCC, I more then understand what the family is going though as I lost my dad at Christmas to cancer so I know how painful it is to go though this so please do include me in any visit.
I think it's a great idea and you have my support in arranging a event.

Could this not be an option to be considered maybe for the London Meet if Ray is available.

In my very young and humble opinion, I think that this would be a good idea, and it would give people time to plan travel etc as it is included in the travel to London for the meet itself.

Of course, it depends on Ray, but this would be my preferred way of doing it (once again, my very humble opinion). I probably wouldnt be able to donate some money through the post or through a transaction (my bank throwing a wobbly), but as I am almost certainly attending the London Meet in July 2011, then I will be more than willing to help out in raising money for such a good cause.

Quite right. Whilst I will more than certainly enjoy the Signal box visit, I will enjoy it more knowing that Ive helped someone with just a little bit of money.

Subject to change

The current ideas revolve around an open bidding for eight places. Two of those places will (subject to confirmation before bidding starts) involve working with Ray in the signalbox on the real equipment. This is real Jimmy Saville experience (though no medal). The remaining six places will (STC) get a full tour of the box. Ray did try to get some cab rides but unfortunately MML and FCC were unable to co-operate.

In fairness to those who can't afford much, a couple of these places are likely to be randomly chosen (the remaining 6-7 by highest bidder). The means of such is still to be decided so that everybody can see that it was a full and fair random selection.

Each bidder will be required to pay a couple of pounds (STC) in order to enter the bidding. All of this will go to the railway family in need (SimSig will absorb the payment charges somehow). All bids will be binding so you must only bid as much as you're prepared to pay - and remember, no matter how much or how little you bid, you'll be in with a chance of winning.

Full details soon.
