Hi all, I've noticed on various threads a type of screenshot illustrating the particular problem. Haven't found any reference to it, but would welcome info on how to do it if needed.
Cheers
Mal.

I've not done this before, but I think the steps are:

1. Open up Publisher (or similar application).
2. Open the Sim, and position it so that the problem can be seen.
3. Press the 'Print Screen' key.
4. In Publisher, right click 'paste', and the image will appear. Use the crop tool to cut out the none-relevent areas of the image.
5. Right-click the image and select 'Save as Picture', and save it somewhere.
6. In the forum, make a new post and click 'add file'
7. Find the picture and double click it to attach.
8. Submit post!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the detailed reply Steamer, but I don't have anything called Publisher or similar. Useful info to have though if I find something similar I can use.
Cheers.
Mal.

In Windows 7 there's the "snipping tool", select the area you want, then file -> save as -> change type to Portable Network Graphic (PNG).

Basic graphics packages like the Paint program supplied since the year dot with Windows will do exactly the same as Steamer suggests if you aren't up to W7 yet.

I always just use Paint.

Simple, and easy to use.

on the mac you just press SHIFT+CMD+4 and you can draw a box around whatever you wish to copy.

As soon as you release the mouse the picture appears on your desktop as a png file.

I used to use an old version of SnagIt for this (v5.0 I think, which did everything I needed, including capturing the mouse cursor too!) but all I use right now are Jing (freeware version) to capture a region, and Paint.Net to add text such as signal numbers, arrows, circles, etc. Jing saves the captures as lossless .PNG files, which are ideal. I upload them using TinyPic, though their captchas are a PIA and sometimes the pics "disappear", so it's best to keep copies.

Jing also allows you to nominate a rectangle of a fixed size you can nominate, useful if you need a series of captures all the same size, though I don't need this very often. Usually guessing by eye is good enough.

There are plenty of other screen capture and graphic editing apps out there. Maybe you should check out a site such as Gizmo's Freeware Reviews to find the best one.

Hi Max,

Studied your many comments recently, mostly good but very critical when you comment on other's 'mistakes' (in your opinion).

Maybe one should do as one preaches and double check one's own links? B)

This works..... Gizmo's Freeware Reviews

Can you upload screenshots onto this site? I tried just now but got a 'fake path' message instead so just ended up uploading to Imageshack and copying the link into my post.

This is a test :)

Test passed.

It seems to be working with both large (1mb) and small (20kb) images at the moment, however I have had it fail before when uploading large images.

In the past when I have uploaded files, I just add them similar to that above and they seem to be OK

I usually click 'Insert' first though to place it in the right place.

For what it's worth, I just copy the links. Here's what I do.

1) Take screenshot and save as PNG file (Jing's default). PNG works best for me - lossless, sharp edges, etc. But GIF would be OK too, since SimSig's screen uses GIF (I think). Certainly no more than 256 colours required.

2) Embellish screenshot if necessary using an image editor. I use Paint.NET, which I like more the better I get to know it. But for most purposes MS Paint works fine. Both are free.

3) Bring up TinyPic.com in browser (Firefox). Browse to image, click Upload and answer Captcha screen.

4) DON'T click "Click Here to view your image" - it will appear all by itself.

5) Left-click once in the field titled "IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards". Doing this will highlight the field in black inverse video.

6) Press Ctrl+C to copy contents of this field to Clipboard.

7) Press Ctrl+V to paste link into forum post where required, in the format

Done.

Hope this helps.

All seems excessively complicated.

What has worked every time for me is:

1) Start to create your post using the Reply or Quote buttons (not the Quick Reply option)
2) Set the cursor where you want the image to appear in your posting.
3) Go to the bottom of the box where you are typing your post and there is a section for Attachments.
4) Browse your hard disk to find the graphic you want to upload.
5) Click on Add File
6) A new button then appears to the right of the Add File button marked Insert
7) Click on this and the instruction to insert the file appears in your text being prepared for posting.
8) When the posting is completed click on Submit.

The file is then uploaded from your hard disk to the SimSig server and the graphic displayed at the relevant point in your text. No need to upload to a third-party site, add a hyperlink or anything like that. However, it only works with a limited range of file extensions (.jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png, .ssg, .wtt, .wtr, .txt, .rtf, .pdf, ,zip, .tar, .gz, .tgz, .tar.bz2 and .html) due to the server set-up.
