or sign up for something like Railmiles and use that to search for headcodes

The old GNER website used to list both the headcode and traction type in their timetable section. I haven't seen any other TOC do this since. Log in to reply |

The staff section of the National Rail website does realtime information with reporting numbers, Trainplan train IDs, etc. Password protected, though! Rob Log in to reply |

Don't be afraid to ask train drivers or other staff for a train's headcode. Generally speaking they're normally happy to provide it. In-fact a couple of times in the past when getting a train at my local station I would speak to the member of staff in the ticket office and ask for the train's headcode and they would provide it generally without a problem, although I would normally briefly explain the reason behind asking just to ally any unspoken concerns they may have.
