I am trying to use the South Humberside sim and im having real problems with the level crossings. When should i lower them as i get penalised for lowering them too soon and also lowering them too late so that the train goes through an open crossing. Also the trains always seem to stop when they reach the level crossings even though the route is set through the crossing. Can anyone help me.

Rule of thumb is you should lower them just early enough that the driver sees green, but not early enough that road users are delayed unduly. Also watch if the trains are non-stop or stopping ones. If you're getting penalties, try a bit later each time until you get it right!

Re the stopping, remember you need to click on the flashing white "clear" button (which starts flashing once the crossing is fully lowered) before the signal will clear.

If you find that you've lowered a crossing too early then go for a bit later, if you've done it a bit late then do it a bit earlier next time. Hopefully in-time you'll get an idea of when you should lower the crossing barriers.

With Mansfield Road LC on Worksop (Thrumpton workstation) say I had an Up Train approaching I tend to lower the barriers when the train was shown to be at Signal U60 (wholly occupying only Track Circuit U60) which ensures it continues to run on greens. For Thrumpton LC further along I tend to lower it as the train is going over Thrumpton West Jn, or as the train is approaching Signal U64 (wholly occupying only Track Cricuit TT119) if it's a stopper at the station (Retford Low Level).

South Humberside is a pain for crossings - there are so many it is difficult to keep track of them! I have a sound triggered when a crossing is ready to be cleared, else I get trains waiting for the crossing to clear - and get penalised for the late train as well as the delay to road users!
There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

Yeah, the acoustic indication for level crossings which can be 'cleared' is very useful, and I sorely miss it on Trent, though I understand the reason Kurt gave for this being so.
And level crossings combined with AB sections can indeed be quite annoying, as you've got no clue when to lower the barriers.
At least I've figured out when to lower Stow Park, do this 5 minutes after the train has departed from/passed Lea Road, then you should be fine.
