This message keeps coming up and I'm not clear about what I should be looking for in order to be able to answer it.

Here's a typical one from Exeter. 5B01 on the Down Main has stopped at Newton Abbot P2 when the driver reports "5B01 delayed at Newton Abbot due to passenger disturbances, expected to depart at about 05:10. Do you wish to replace signal S88 back to danger?" Signal 88 is the starter for this platform, currently showing a proceed aspect as I've already set the route ahead of the train from it to the next signal.

Why is the driver asking me, the signalman? And what difference would my answer make, anyway? Why can't he just let me know that he will be delayed and leave it at that? Is it customary for drivers to prompt signalmen like this? It seems more logical that I should be phoning him to inform him in advance that I will be replacing the signal if I choose to do so.

If I say, "OK, signal will be replaced", this should theoretically prevent ACOA since he will expect the signal to be replaced. However, SimSig doesn't seem to care and I get penalized for an ACOA as soon as I replace the signal.

If I don't replace the signal, the only time it might matter is if there happens to be another train close behind, in which case I might run into a call on error. Oh well, better for that to happen than for the train to run into the back of 5B01.

There must be a lot more to this. I haven't found any discussion threads about this so thought I'd ask. Thanks again for all your helpful advice.

It's so you can replace the signal without incurring an ACoA, as you will "have come to an understanding" with the driver about the impending signal aspect change....PROVIDED you reply accordingly to the call first, and then set the signal back within the next minute.

This will allow you to free up the route to permit other moves to done that would otherwise have to wait on the delayed train resolving his difficulties.

In your example, it would allow a train from Paighton to be able to arrive into P3 if needed, or one from P1 to proceed to Totnes ahead of the delayed train.

I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

As andy has said, provided that you say to him that the singal will be replaced, you won't incur a penalty

When you ACOA a train without telling them first, you will get 2 messages come up. one say 120 seconds approach locking. the other says XXXX recieved an adverse change of aspect at signal yyy.

If you tell the train driver that you will replace the signal, you still get the first message about the approach locking as this is a system that happens in the signals and it doesn't know that the train is stopped and delayed (real life signals pannels don't have an F2 button to look at and see how each train is doing), however you should not get the second message and it will not change the results in your F5 statistics.

If you do get the second message then you have either not told the driver that you will be pulling the signal (you must finsih the phone call first) or you have left it too long (as andy has said, there is a 1 minute time limit) before you pulled the signal

On the big railway you'd simply have to make the driver aware of the change of aspect. Some will ask the driver, but as long as the driver is aware then you have followed the rules.

You also have to inform the guard and the dolly with the trolley...

Here's a nonsense call to confuse newbies:



If UM208 is completely automatic, how can I replace it? It hasn't even got an Emergency roundel next to it, like the next signal.

There should be some code included to prevent a call like this from going out when the signal is detected as being automatic.

Reminds me of the old joke: How do you confuse a [insert nationality here]? Offer him a spade and a shovel, and ask him to take his pick.

but if a signal in front of it can be replaced, causing the signal in question to show a more restrictive aspect, hence the call still needs to be made to find out what is happening. although that exact signal isnt being replaced, it is reverting to a more restrictive aspect.

another argument could be that the signal in question might not be plated automatic for a variety of reasons, hence the driver would still make the call.

Thanks jc92 for your comments. True, in real life a driver might be expected to enquire. UM208 looks like a starter signal for Teignmouth. However, in SimSig, my hands are tied.

It's easy enough to reply 'no' if you don't need to replace the signal (or a signal in advance that'll affect the one in question) - but think carefully before answering as there's no way back (as - almost - in reality, where there might be no easy way of getting hold of the Driver to tell him that you want to put back in front of him - a mobile phone number left with the Signalman is perhaps the best option!).
