Exeter v2.227.0, TT = Exeter Summer 2006 v2.222

5L52-X leaves Exeter New Yard at 13:22 for Exeter St Davids P1 to join 1L52 approaching on the Up Main. 5L52-X reaches P1 first, but when 1L52 enters the platform joining becomes impossible. Each displays the "Unknown train in front" message in F2.

This problem has been posted before. The advice given was

Quote:
Steamer:
Quote:
When the two trains have joined, try using the shunt forwards command in F2 to move it right up to the other end of the platform (change the train's direction if necessary).
Headshot119
Quote:
I believe the issue is that the first train into the platform is stopping short at the Exeter Central end, the second train which needs to "bang on" therefore doesn't have enough room to fully berth in the platform track circuit.

If you edit the timetable on 5L52-X and set it's stopping position at Exeter St Davids to "near end" it should work without error.
Just for the record, I tried Headshot119's solution first without success; even tried editing the stopping position to "Near end exact" (also tried "Far end"!) but still no joy. Then I tried Steamer's suggestion; reversed 5L52-X's direction from Down to Up and ordered it to shunt forwards. When it did so, 1L52 meekly followed it into the station and joining took place. Thanks Steamer.

I thought I would give this topic its own thread. Has anyone else had success with the "Near end" method or can offer any suggestion why it didn't work for me? I checked that the TT edit was saved during that session (but see below).

Also, I don't know why SimSig doesn't save the TT edit permanently. When I started a new simulation, SS asked me if I'd like to save the old TT. I clicked Yes, but when I reloaded my saved sim, the TT changes were not saved.

An edit via F2 will NOT be saved with the TT, as it's an edit to a train already in sim. Only edits done via F4 (the stored TT) are saved.

See TT explanation for info.

Changes to stopping position (near end exact, etc) need to be made via F2 once the train is in the sim, and would only make a difference if changed before the train has reached that location.

Sometimes it is difficult for the timetable to allow for all eventualities of the sequence in which trains will arrive.

Once trains are at the location then reversing/shunting forward is usually the best method to sort any trains that haven't quite stopped in the right place.

Thanks, didn't realize that.

From this it seems no amount of TT editing will prevent this problem from recurring.

There are 3 ways to avoid the problem, in preference order:
1) Before 5L25X appears in the sim, use F4 Edit train 5L52X to show near end stop at Exeter SD, and save the TT for future use. Then when it appears in the sim it will have this in its TT and will stop at the right hand end and leave space for 1L52 to arrive;
2) If 5L52X is already in sim but not arrived at Exe SD, F2 Edit its TT as above. It will then stop at the correct location.
3) If 5L52X has already arrived and thus in the wrong position, simply reverse its direction and it should run back towards New Yard, albeit the driver may well call in for 'authority to move'.

If you end up doing plan 2, it's also worth doing the edit in plan 1 as well for future use anyway.

Edit: for info the 2 trains are both 70m long, and the TC is 360m, so plenty of space to cuddle up to each other. The purist would make 5L25X's stopping position Far end exact 100m, as then the joined units would be nearer the starter signal for subsequent departure.
In general, the default stopping location is far end, but can be near end as determined by the following next move.

Thanks AndyG. From what you say the reason editing the TT didn't work for me was that the train was already in the sim, waiting at Exeter New Yard.

I'll try your idea again, before 5L52X makes its first appearance.

Sometimes what works on one occasion will not work on another if the sequence of events is different. In the given example, if 1L52 were to arrive before 5L52X then there would be no risk of the latter moving too far down the platform before stopping so the problem would not arise.

More generally, in some situations the standing timetable may not cover every eventuality - if the timetable is written to cover one sequence of events but then trains arrive in a different order then manual intervention might still be required.

Good point. Add to the list:
Plan 4) (minimal effort armchair method) - hold 5L25 in New Yard until 1L52 arrives, then send it into P1.
