I bet you're glad you spent all that time putting a diagram together just to stimulate this level of discussion.

Thanks for the feedback, Max.

At the time I was having quite a bit of fun just messing around with all kinds of colours. It was the first time I had actually played with image editing software more advanced than MS Paint, and I was only really focusing on what looked "alright" for me.
If people just want a white background with default colours then I suggest to Karl (or anyone who can make them) that instead of inverting the colours, they replace "black" with "white". (FYI, I used Paint.net and with the "Fill" tool it replaces the original colour with the chosen one).

I think if we use the original orangey-colour for stations it should be made a little more dull (possibly slightly transparent) so it doesn't blend with the white background so much. Maybe even have small light grey borders around the boxes? I don't know how you would achieve that without doing it by hand, but it would certainly help with the contrast between orange and white.

Oh - I was pretty sure I had used primary red for signals - It was certainly the red given to me in the "quick-access-colour-picker-with-normal-colours" panel. Maybe it came out a bit odd in rendering.

Regarding the image format woes, the master copy I made is unfortunately still a .jpeg, so there's not really a lot I can do about that.

I'll do some more fiddling with a fresh copy tomorrow taking your suggestions onboard, but for now it is well past midnight so I'm going to get some sleep

Are there diagrams produced similar to this ARTC (NSW) driver's diagram? Easy to read and pleasant on the eyes. No colours involved.

Actually, you are probably right and the unusual purplish tint (to my eyes) may simply be part of the "bleed" effect I mentioned above. I used to strike this in producing diagrams for Web pages - even the colours never looked right till I gave up using JPGs for this purpose.

Glad to read you like using Paint.NET too. You might like to check out my post on using its Magic Wand tool here

Can I nominate this post for "Post of the year award 2012" and offer you a pint at a meet of your choice?

Just FYI, what I have done in the past with these is, as you say, invert the colours but then I save as a monochrome bitmap which only gives black and white. The background is white but everything else is black. It works for me but obviously everone has their own preference. A snippet of the Saltley map is shown below to illustrate.

You know, there's about three-quarters of the information there required to build a simulation (okay, it would have to use UK signalling rules). If track circuit information isn't available, plausible track circuits could be added.

Even though SimSig's colours are primaries (red, blue, green) and major secondaries (cyan, magenta, yellow, etc.), so could be accommodated within the narrow but economic colour range of GIF images
GIF can in fact handle any colour, though it's limited to 256 colours in an image (it uses a colour table rather than encoding the colours of each pixel directly.

The colours currently used in SimSig are the following (though not all are available in all contexts and there are a few special cases - such as lever frames - where a different value is used for a given colour):

black000000

blueFFA000

brown00458B

creamA0FFFF

crimson000088

cyanFFFF00
The big question is; Do I bother making one for Derby?

Probably not to be honest with you.

Trouble is now we are missing a load of the signal heads.

Why not. I think you've done a great job with Saltley. With some sims having different era's, these diagrams would become very useful. I salute your good work.

i agree with 58050, forget all the comments on formatting nonsense, it doesnt matter if it looks pretty as long as it does the job

wack some numbers onto an inverted image and upload it and most people will be very happy

I would also add that most of us can see from the diagram where the signal number is displayed. The fact that tghe signal head maybe missing isn't going to mean that no one knows there isn't a signal there.
