Well, Virgin lost the Cross Country franchise in November 2007 but cross country services between Brighton and Birmingham (and beyond) continued with the new operator (Arriva?) into 2008 (December 2008?) So I guess the precise answer to your question is November 2007.

There may still be some "VT 4/5 car stop" signs around at stations though....

The December (14th) timetable change of 2008 was when direct services to the midlands & the north ceased operating through to Brighton.

Did they stop it before Cross Country took over from Virgin? I dont recall ever seeing an XC liveried/branded vomit down there.

No, Arriva's incarnation of the CrossCountry franchise commenced in November 2007, and services to Gatwick/Brighton ceased in December 2008, so there was a 13-month period of Arriva XC running to Brighton.

I travelled East Croydon to Leamington Spa on the penultimate Saturday of operation and I seem to recall it being a CrossCountry-liveried unit (I think most of the fleet had been treated by then). Incidentally, I happened to be on a route-learner via Crystal Palace/Streatham Hill rather than taking the main line via Streatham Common! I was briefly confused when we didn't turn left at Windmill Bridge...

Saturday mornings were always good fun in the last couple if years they ran, especially the AM departure from Brighton. It was always best to request that days trust schedule for it, as we were never sure what timings and route it was supposed to go at TBASC. There were many a wrong signal giving to those cross country trains because of last minute ammended schedules that were never passed onto the signallers!
