Just a little fun topic What is your favourite train e.g. Steam, Diesel or Electric? (can say multiple) what class and (if you one have one) a specific loco you like say and why you like it etc. for me it, steam and I like the GWR 14xx, i like it because of watch in the Titfield Thunderbolt film wich ferturched No 1401 when i was little and I've liked the class ever since. update if i had to shoose a diesel it would be the class 55's Deltics of the HST's electrics would be the 82's - 87 any between that class because they all look similar Last edited: 27/02/2012 at 17:06 by handle Log in to reply |

All sorts.... I love steam locomotives as steam has an attraction that the more modern diesel and electric locomotives simply don't have. I have a particular soft spot for the LMS locomotives which I got off my dad as he grew up trainspotting at Litchfield Trent Valley watching Jubilees, Patriots, Royal Scots, Duchesses and Princess Coronations whistle past on the WCML. Must have been awesome to see.... However, as I grew up in the Diesel age, if I had to pick a Diesel have to be the Hoovers (Class 50's for the uninitiated). I always liked 50015 Valiant....not sure why particularly that one but there you go....Used to see the 50's from time to time at New St on the Paddington-Birmingham services in the mid- to late- 80's. Has to be the deltics for me. I remember my first time as a child being taken train spotting on Kings Cross P8. The sound made by these machines is unmistakeable and unrivalled. Pinza (55 007) was my particular favourite as she once worked a special through Ashford (Kent) where I grew up as a child. A visit by a class 47 was considered an event in those days !! DMU - Class 108, The nicest DMU to work under and on. DMMU - Class 127, A couple of people know why. EMU - Class 323, Nothing like thrashing up and down the Cross City Line all day on one. On diesels, it has to be Deltics for me, ever since I managed a cabride from Cleethorpes to the Cross back in the 70s. Class 47s and 50s come a close 2nd though. Having worked with the 323s out of New Street, they're a nifty EMU. As for DMUs, 156 and 158 both comfortable and nippy units.  Mal. Log in to reply |

I prefer the electric Traction. My big Favourite is the german Class (Baureihe) E 40 aka 139/140 today. Sadly there are only a few left in the nortern Part oft Germany, but as I live not too far from Gemünden (know as the "Freight-Paradise"  there is the chance you can see one or two coming up in front of a Freight running along the River Main.  Another one is the Class 86. When I had made a Trip to London last Year I visited Willesden Junction where exactly in the right moment a Pair of them was coming down the Slow Lines towards Camden Jn. But also the Magic of the Diesels - The German Class 218 for example with her unbeatable Sound is just like the best Music in the Ears There is the Video on Youtube that shows the Class 37 starting in Snow, if I'll make another Trip to the UK, I'll do my best to see a "Tractor" in Reality... Diesel for me as both having spent time on the footplate & as a loco controller seen it from both sides. Loco wise Cl.58s & Cl.45s for reliability. Cl.45s probably the best loco BR ever built with 5 divert stages were very fast accelerating loco & would slip under wet rail conditions. Cl.58s had probably the best ride of any loco ever built. On the DMU front my favourite & the best for me were Cl.127 'red triangle' diesel hydraulic units we had on the Bedford - St. Pancras suburban services powered by 2 x Rolls Royce 238hp engines, much better than the gear change sets everyone else had. Cl.45 favourite was 45022 'Lytham St. Annes' as it was my last one for sight & cleared it at Derby in 1975 & actually drive the same loco 11 years later & 58050 as it was my last Cl.58 for haulage getting it in 2002 when I was Trainsmaster at Bescot off the shed at Bescot & around the yard prior to it working a Wolverhampton - Hoo junction steel train. I would derely love for First Great Western and Cross Country to restore all the Class 50s and 37s and get them back out on the West Country, but in this day, theres nothing like a good run up and down the sea wall at Dawlish window hanging on a HST. two things... a lovely 31/4 on a set of Mk.2s, actually any 31s. love them, first loco i worked on, one i most often work with. second, a nice blue 56 on a set of 36 HAAS

Iarnród Éireann 22000 Class – so quiet inside and sleek outside. Used to ride them all the time from Stáisiún Uí Chonghaile to Maigh Nuad. Pure luxury without the price tag (despite being InterCity trains, you could ride on them with a standard Commuter ticket along that stretch). Also loved the CIÉ 8100 Class too, at least before they did their refurbishment.

 N&W Class J - What a machine. Great semi-streamlined body shape, that manages to look both muscular and smooth at the same time, and what a performer...capable of pulling a 15-car, 1000 ton consist at speeds in excess of 110mph. 300psi boiler, 80,000lb tractive effort, over double any of the Gresley A-series locos. All time favourite has to be Deltics. Pinza has already been mentioned in this thread and that was the little baby that always sticks out in my mind. Used to go out to Potters Bar station and watch them powering thru. Unmistakable sound! Class 373 Eurostar is one of my favourites these days though. Still remember my first journey on one. Grew up with 27/1's and 27/2's on the Edinburgh-Glasgow shuttles then chasing the rest of the 27's on Dundee and Fife circuits in my teens. However, I'm with Danny252 - anything with a tail-lamp on the back and a loco on the front suits me. Units? Pah! However, some of my earliest memories were sitting behind the driver on a Cl.101 into Edinburgh or Glasgow.

If American power is kosher, then the Electro-Motive F7 is my winner. I should have a picture of ex-B&M 4266 or 4268 somewhere but can't immediately find it. (Yes yes, but it's diesel and I have no taste. )

At the time ('80s) I'd have to say the Class 50 - cleared the lot for at least 1000miles each (couple over 2000) which, given I lived in Dundee, was quite a feat! But also loved the 40s and whatever the Edinburgh-Dundee's chucked out. These days I'd happily settle for anything from that era including duffs. However, I'm not sure quite what I'd make of having to commute into KX each and every day with a Cl31 vice my 365! Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! I'm going to go really downmarket! I have very fond memories of the old 2BILs on the Brighton-Worthing route in the 50s and 60s. Yes, I know they were decrepit old things, but they got me to and from school and gave me my first independent childhood trips (I think a return from Lancing to Brighton was about 2s 3d - saveable from pocket money).
