Hi guys, I'm looking to move on from Royston and Lime Street, and on to something new, what sim would you suggest for a third sim? It must be easily 1 persom manageable really. Any suggestions? Username TIM in multiplayer Log in to reply |

I'd say you should move onto Exeter, give Sam Tugwells excellent Sunday Timetable it'll give you a more gentle introduction to the sim than some of the busier timetables.

I'd say Paul Currans' Oxted would be a good sim for someone relatively new looking to progress gradually onto larger sims, and is in reality a single -manned box.

wembley sub is fairly easy to play, although it does have a couple of eccentricities in it

Gloucester is not too bad either for single working, or Swindon A&B.

That was my reason for suggesting them - they look quite big in a way but in reality are quite simple to operate. If Gloucester is used with a modern timetable there are no locomotive changes to deal with and hardly any banking either. Swindon A&B has the advantage that large parts of it can be left to the ARS. My suggestion is normally Peterborough. It is a busy sim but it has ARS. What I would suggest is running the sim with the subarea for Peterborough station turned off. That way you can concentrate on Peterborough station whilst ARS handles the rest for you. Obviously you will need to glance through the rest of the screens to make sure that ARS is behaving itself and there will be the occasional manual route that needs attention. Log in to reply |

Now you've got your feet wet....Go the whole hog and try Kings Cross with the standard TT (avoid Peters '70's or Kurts 80's TT yet as you'll be swamped). It is manageable by one person if you run it one to one! I jumped from playing Stafford to playing Kings Cross and whilst initially a little frustrating, you soon get the hang of things. I agree with Guidomcc, Southampton would make a good third solo sim. It's not too high vertically* nor too wide, and you have a choice of platforms for through trains. When you're on top of it you will find you can give your trains a straight run out or in, which keeps things moving. There's enough in the updated manual and forum posts (Category: Southampton) now to help you with any difficulties. *This can be put to advantage by adding extra view windows for the two bottleneck ("pinch point"  areas, St. Denys and Redbridge Junction, below and on top of the main window. Anyway thanks maxand and Guidomcc, I've downloaded Southampton, and so far it looks good

I'd also agree with andyb0607- as a novice I find Peterborough straight-forward to manage single-handed with the help of ARS. However there are still challenges with platform allocations when there are or early/late running trains. Also, in the event of failures on the four-track sections it's possible to keep things moving with careful regulation around the problem.
