I have been on SimSig for many years now and i dont know what the R on top of certain signals mean. What i assumed is that they are repeater signals

Repeater - It displays a green aspect if the next signal is green, or an amber aspect if the next signal is either amber or red.

I think Derby had a working banner repeater when it came out to play at London Meet July 2011 (as noticed and frothed over by Tim ) and Oxted has a fair few.

Repeaters can show Yellow (no Amber on the UK railway - except for Level Crossings) and also Double Yellow as well as Green. It all depends on the location.

There are locations where the repeater affects the pervious signal.

In the example: S1 -> S3R -> S3

As S3R cannot show red, S1 must display red until the line is clear up to and including the overlap of S3. Therefore, S1 can only show R/G (3 aspect signalling) or R/YY/G (4 aspect signalling); S1 cannot show a single yellow.

A banner repeater will show a horizontal bar if the signal is red, and a diagonal bar otherwise. I think they're suffixed 'BR' now as well. They don't affect other signals in the way normal repeaters do, as described by Matt.

What about a green banner repeater though

Shows that the next signal is green (as opposed to Y or YY). As far as I know, there aren't many around, and they're only used where it's considered beneficial to give the driver extra confirmation.

Actually there are some (possibly most?) banner repeaters that are interlinked with the main signal and if they fail, will hold the signal in rear at red.

Yeah the one at Croess Newydd holds the main signal red if it goes pop.

Not always true. Back when you were allowed "look back" "OFF" indicators that were on the back of the signal, so that the driver of a train that was too long to fit in the platform knew the aspect, those indicators were amber, not yellow.

(To cross the threads, St.Pancras had these at some platforms.)

I had no idea about this…interesting! Does that mean the colour of yellow signals is different from the amber on the traffic lights?

It's just the terminology used on the railway. Yellow for signals, and Amber for the Level Crossing warning lights (before the red-flashing ones start)

Here is a photo of the back indications on D726 signal at Dundee station. You can see that the amber of the theatre indicator is quite a different shade from a conventional yellow aspect. The Main/Sub/Off stencils are supposed to be the same shade but seem not to have aged as well. 'F' for Fife by the way..
