Has anyone seen any progress with the above. I believe its on of the first modular signalling schemes?

Postman,

According to the signalbox.org.uk site this was to have started in 2010 as a trial. However, in April this year I did a signalling trip, covering Shrewsbury, Wem, Prees, Whitchurch and Wrenbury - the latter 4 boxes are on the line in question - and all the boxes were still active. What the situation is now I don't know.

The planned closure of Wem box has caused local controversy there as shown by these two articles from 2010 in the Shropshire Star:
Railway signal box facing axe? (26-Feb-2010)
Warning over plan to automate Wem level crossing (30-Jul-2010)

In regards of that second article I think the point about 999 services being unable to cross in a hurry, after resignalling has taken place, if the barriers are down is a very valid one. Perhaps Wem could be kept as a gate box?

The box at Whitchurch (Shropshire) (SYC, 13m 35ch) was used only occasionally for emergency working, engineering work or S & T testing but was switched out at all other times. When I visited the station on 09th April 2011 as part of my signalling trip it was in poor condition and didn't look as if it was used at all, even though the signals through the station still had the box code WH. The box was permanently switched out wef 19-Apr-2011 and I think it is likely, in view of the box's condition, that it has since been demolished. However I live in Bristol and can not confirm either way.

As for Shrewsbury (Crewe Bank) (SYC, 31m 79ch) I think this one has been switched out for some time and it is, IMO, strange that this one hasn't gone sooner. My understanding is that it has been switched out since 02-Feb-2007 but presumably it can be switched in if needed.

Hope this is of some use.
Dave

I can understand that concern, but how is this handled at other crossings? After all, it's not like there aren't any other full-barrier crossings out there.
Of course a local box might have some advantage in that regard, but wouldn't an arrangement be feasible, where the emergency services dispatcher phones the Signalling Centre to tell them that an ambulance/the fire brigade/... will pass over the crossing in approximately five/ten... minutes, so it can be kept open. After clearing the crossing, the driver could then radio in to the dispatcher, who would relay the message to the signaller.

Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

You'll prob find there moaning about it becauses there a police/fire/ambulance depot close by to the crossing, but yes nezza you have a completely valid point there

It used to be the case that Northumberland Park LC (on the Lea Valley Line north of Tottenham Hale) was the only access to the Victoria Line depot and an industrial estate. Back in the days when there was a railway telephone exchange at Seven Sisters there was a standing arrangement that, if an emergency service had a call that needed access they would call SS exchange who had authority to connect them to the crossing box at NP (later to the signalbox at Brimsdown), who in turn would keep the crossing open to road as long as necessary.

A quick update here. I write this from Platform 3 of Newport station where a notice advises that the Shrewsbury - Crewe line is closed for "essential maintenance work" until 1230 on 20th August and all day on 21st August.

Presumably the death knell for Crewe Bank, Harlescott LC, Wem, Prees, Whitchurch, Wrenbury and Nantwich? A pity if so: would have welcomed better photos in my collection for Wrenbury.

Oh, and good luck to the 999 crews at Wem as well, whose work is certainly far more essential than the resignalling.

Dave

I don't think it will be happening just yet. If anything I would imagine they are carrying out track renewals or enabling works for the resignalling. On the Ely-Norwich a lot of the mechanical equipment needs to be moved slightly to allow room for the new equipment. For example wire runs may need to be re-aligned, semaphores moved back slightly from the running line and location cabinets shifted etc etc.

A quick heads-up on this one. I have seen on another forum that there are suggestions the commissioning of the Gresty Lane - Crewe Bank signalling has been put back. Anyone know more?
