When should the crossings be dropped relative to the trains?

Peter
i start dropping 1 min before departure, 30 secs to drop and clear, 30 to dispatch. in most cases this means trains passing lots of yellows. having used this method, i have rec'd no penalties

For Lancing it's good to lower the barriers as soon as the train has passed the last green signal. Unless the train needs to call at a station before the LC. In other sims with faster speeds or four-aspect signalling you may need to lower barriers earlier.
this works ok except some trains end up with recovery at lancing or shoreham, meaning the barriers are down unessecarily long

I go for 1 minute before departure from last station before crossing, and as the train passes the last green signal for none-stop trains. The one exception is trains from Hove that don't stop at Portslade, in those cases I lower as soon as the train enters- but check Three Bridges has pulled off the platform starter!

Hello Joe (jc52)

Lancing is famous for running trains on yellow aspects. Just ask any Coastway West based train crew. it's the only way to keep both trains and road traffic moving.

Just encountered a slight 'irregularity'.

The time is 07:37 and train 1N59 has just entered at HOVE platform 3 when I get a phone call from the driver stating that he is waiting at RED signal T677 (Hove starter). There are no route lights set from Hove.

I have uploaded save game.

EDIT: same problem is now affecting 2C95 at the same location.
I had a similar issue at 0600 with 2N51 calling in from T677. Its route was finally set once an up train in the opposite direction (1H81) which had been delayed had reached Hove, although I don't know if this is connected.

More generally, should T677 ring through to Brighton rather than Lancing, since Brighton controls it?

Unless you're chained, Brighton also receives calls from Fishersgate for example.

My methods are:

  • If the train stops at a station before a signal protecting a level crossing, lower the barriers on arrival

  • Lancing Down: on departure from Shoreham

  • Shoreham Station Up: on departure from Lancing

  • Portslade: barriers seem to lower promptly, so when the train is occupying the Aldrington TC

  • Shoreham East: on occupying Fishersgate TC

This seems to work but drivers do see a lot of yellows, but I guess this is okay considering dabbadaz's advice.

Reason: adding Shoreham East

In my example involving 1N59, the preceding train 2E03 has just left Shoreham.

The route was finally set from Hove at 07.39

1N02 is clearly having a bad day:
Quote:
07:45:25 1N02 delayed at Shoreham By Sea due to door problems, expected to depart at about 07:50
07:53:54 1N02 delayed at Southwick due to door problems, expected to depart at about 08:00
08:01:02 1N02 delayed at Portslade due to unexplained reasons, expected to depart at about 08:05

Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

The driver is not permitted to convey messages that may be of a derogative or abusive nature to the signaller.

In my case it was early morning and I think preceding train had cleared Worthing. Afraid I don't have an ssg.

Think I have found what is causing the breakage of the fringe auto working at Hove, this may also cause issues at Worthing (not looked closely at that end). Part of the test I have for setting a route at Hove is that the down to up trailing points at the Lancing end of Hove are not locked, which they will be if there is an up train entering the station. Somehow during the destructive S&T testing of the sim, we never had a situation of this nature.

Goochy - Can you remember if there was an up train between Portslade and Hove in your case?

If anybody else has this problem could you please post to confirm the nearest up train at the time, and only really need one further post / test on this to confirm my thoughts on this gents.

Many thanks

Paul

I think you're right, Paul. It's just happened again with 1H55 on the up line at Portslade.

Once 1H55 had arrived in platform 1 at Hove the route cleared for 2N07.

Yes there was - 1H81 was heading that way and it was definitely once that arrived at Hove that the down signal cleared.

Many thanks John and Brian for all that info to allow the issue to be found this quicky, I can now 99.9% be certain that I have cured the fault, which will be sorted in any new versions of the sim.
