Start by reading the wiki regarding setting up a multi-player game. The wiki is not step by step as such instructions aren't feasible given the infinite number of possibilities regarding how your network and internet connection could be arranged and what hardware and software are in use.

However, that should give you enough to get started. If something is not clear after you've read it, then post questions and someone will help you.

Could you tell us what router you have? Or failing that, your ISP? BT and Sky have standard routers I'm sure someone could help you - I don't mind writing a guide to port forwarding on Sky devices.

I thought an example might help. There are several caveats which might render the information below invalid, but I thought it would be a starting point.

Most people in the UK get their internet through Sky, Virgin, TalkTalk (other providers are available!).

If you have ADSL, there will be a box connected to your telephone line, which can also a wireless access point, and will have 1 or more wired ethernet ports. If you have Cable, the internet usually "appears" as an RJ45 socket on the back of the set top box, and there would usually be a small router.

(Other setups are possible but these two are quite common)

If you go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ you will find out your public internet address (ip address). That will normally be the address you give to other people wishing to connect to your hosting. (again, there are exceptions) Write this down.

The other side of the box is usually one or more computers using an internal range of ip addresses. These usually start 192.168.X.X or 10.X.X.X. The concept to have in mind is that the job of the "box" is to allow all of these devices to send stuff to the internet, and ensure replies go back to the right device.

In order to host, you need to get the opposite to happen, and normally any connections from the internet to your "box" would mainly be rejected. So you need people on the internet to connect to your box and onto the correct PC, and go back again the right way.

When you start SimSig and choose Network Play, then press server, your computer listens on a certain "port". It also tells your local ip address (192.168.X.X or 10.X.X.X). Write this down. If you get a question from Windows Firewall (or other similar software) at this point, say you DO want to allow connections to SimSig.

The final step is what stumps most people, you need to tell the "box" to listen on the port you choose (normally 50505) and to forward anything arriving from the internet through the "box" to the computers ip address (e.g. 192.168.0.9)

How to do that would vary, but most "box" have a web interface, so simply opening a browser and browsing to http://192.168.0.1 and http://192.168.1.1 would be a likely start. (Your next hurdle will then be finding the password)

If that doesn't work, try hitting Start, typing "cmd" and in the black windows that appears type "ipconfig" and press [Enter]
Then scroll up for a line that says Default Gateway and note the IP address. Try that address in the web browser.

If still stuck at this point then give us some more details about the make and model of the "box" and whether it connects to the phone line, or to a top-set box, or some other exotic system!

I hope this helps you get going and that I haven't confused you too much

regards
Tim

If one has a Sky router, the router setup page is at http://192.168.0.1/

Username: "admin"
Password: "sky"

It's a two step process. Firstly, you need to define the ports. Click the Security Tab, then services. Click "Add Custom Service", and use the following information:

Name: Simsig
Type: TCP/UDP
Start Port: 50500
End Port: 50510

Apply your settings.

The second step is to open the ports. Click again on Security, then on "Firewall Rules". Create a new INBOUND service, with the following settings:

Service: SimSig (that we created earlier)
Action: Allow Always
Send to LAN Server: ***.***.***.*** - Insert your Computer IP here. As Tim says, this can be found on SimSig itself. Click Host, Server, and you should see something like 192.168.0.5 in the box. Put this in here.
WAN Users: Any
Start: Leave as 0.0.0.0
End: Leave as 0.0.0.0
Log: Never

Click Apply and you should be good to go.

A quick troubleshooting note - if you have hosted before, and find it no longer works, check the "Send to LAN Server" IP is still the same as the one displayed in SimSig. If you update/reset/fiddle with your router they sometimes get re-assigned.

Hope that makes sense!

You could try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXILywja5VI

Also if you look elsewhere on the forum (use the search) I'm sure I have seen speedtouch mentioned.

For AOL in the UK, I have seen reports that the default username is "Administrator" and the password box should be left blank.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Arriva's connection is from a Speedtouch modem, does he definitely need to port forward? He/She could just have a phone lead plugged into the back of his/her computer, in which case port forwarding is unnecessary.

It its just a modem then yes port forwarding won't be necessary.

However, to know for certain you'd need to know the precise part number of the SpeedTouch to know what it is. I had a SpeedTouch but mine was a router that incorporated an ADSL modem as well so port forwarding was needed to host.

I have a quick suggestion to check whether port forwarding is needed: First check your external IP by http://www.whatismyip.com/, then check your local IP by SimSig or Control Panel or ipconfig and compare them. If they are the same you basically don't need port forwarding.

P.S. I have a VDSL modem which is a router, but is running in bridge mode... so port forwarding is not needed...

Depends on the make and model of the dongle.
