A question from a non-SimSig friend.

How many examples of stations can you find (whether mainline, metro, or tram) where:
* there are two separate routes serving the station, each with their own tracks;
* the four tracks are all parallel;
* the tracks are on two different levels with the tracks effectively above each other;
* each level has one track from each route;
* there is level interchange between the tracks on the same level.

The only example in London I know of is Baker Street (Jubilee and Bakerloo lines), though "parallel" is perhaps stretching it a bit. But are there examples from elsewhere in the world?

No, they're parallel to each other on the same level. The same is true for all the Victoria Line interchanges that look like that.

Or Canning Town (I think) could be another, the DLR line is parallel with the Jubilee line by being directly above it.

On reflection I think it's that pairs that are above each other.

There are a few stations that meet this criteria:-

- T-Centraal (Green and Red Lines) on the Stockholm Tunnelbahn
- Plarrer (lines U1 and U2/3) on the Nuremburg U-Bahn.
- Siam station on the Bangkok skytrain.
- Yau Tong and Tim Keng Leng stations on the Hong Kong MTR

I suspect that stations like this are quite unusual as it would require both lines to be build simultaneously (or at least planned simultaneously).

Regards,

Peter.

Camden Town doesn't meet the "parallel" test, but apart from that it would fit.

Canning Town doesn't count because the lines aren't split between the two levels - each line is entirely on one level (ignoring the new platforms on the Stratford International branch).

I found these this morning, together with five (!) other stations on the MTR.

Not necessarily - the arrangment could have been changed later. Baker Street only became like that 40 years after the original layout was built.

Nollendorfplatz (U1 and U4) in Berlin.
Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

7th Ave on the New York Subway, on the E and B/D lines. The only question is how you determine the "interchange on the level" aspect - at either end are flying triangular junctions (or diving perhaps, since they're underground) linking the various bits together.

Also Queensboro Plaza on the N/Q and 7 lines. Similar question for the interchange though - on the upper level only.

If I've understand correctly, there are 87 (I just came up with Nam Cheong but in fact it isn't :P) of this type of interchange station in Hong Kong. In fact they are the majority of all interchange stations in Hong Kong.

Actually that is Tiu Keng Leng. To be noted that Tiu Keng Leng is a terminus of the Kwun Tong Line so one platform is drop-off only.

Some confusion here: I was referring to passenger interchange (i.e. it should be cross-platform or otherwise on the level), not track connections.

In that case I think there is another that I rejected on that basis - but I ought to do some work instead of find it again!

Could Clapham Junction be one? Technically theres not really a connection at the station between Southern services and South West Trains services.

Satisfies the first two conditions but not the other three.

* the tracks are on two different levels with the tracks effectively above each other;

Well the South London line dives underneath to go North, and the line into Victoria goes over the top.

* there is level interchange between the tracks on the same level.

This seems reasonable, bit curved but fairly level.

All the platforms are on the same level; nothing is effectively on top of anything else.

But there's no level interchange between different routes, you have to go up to the bridge or down to the subway.

You can do a level change from a train to Victoria to a train from Waterloo, or a train from Victoria to a train going down onto the South London line.

For the ones that happen to use opposite sides of the same island, yes. But that's not the question. The question asks for two routes, each with a track on an upper level and a lower level. If you also could do a level change between trains from Victoria and trains to Waterloo, and that level was above or below the platforms where you can change between trains to Victoria and trains from Waterloo, it would work.
