Found yet another issue with the 2006 summer timetable: 2A59 wants to leave Exeter Central 2 at 2248½ and arrive at Exeter SD 1 at 2251. 1C01 is already in Exeter SD 1 (scheduled arrival 2245). 1C01 doesn't leave until 2305. Call-ons are impossible on this route.

I hope this is the right place for bugs to be reported? And I hope impossible-to-execute timetables are considered bugs? Sorry if this is considered normal and I've been annoying people pointlessly.

Yes, it is the right place and reporting things like this in never pointless or annoying. However, whether what you've found is actually a bug or not is another matter....

Timetables are generated from working timetables and other timetable data which itself may have errors in it. Some TT writers choose copy the data into SimSig as accurately as possible, errors and all. On the other hand, other TT writers choose to fix the errors and thus make a timetable not true to the original data. Neither approach is wrong, they are just different points of view. You'd need to hear from the original writer and find out their intention was when they wrote it to find out if it's considered a bug or not.

Of course, there is nothing to stop you going ahead and altering your copy of the TT to correct it if you feel its necessary.

Oh, now that makes sense! I knew the timetables were supposed to reflect real life, but I never thought about the real-life paper timetables having these errors in them to start with. You shouldn’t be hearing any more summer 2006 issues from me any more, though, I got to 2500 and ran out of trains I just replatformed where necessary; I guess I don’t care all that much about my score.

Hawk, the number of real-life timetabling errors is far higher than most people would think.

Many never manifest themselves to passengers because of the skill of professional signalmen who can work round the problems. It is relatively common place to have more than one train booked in the same platform or section at the same time, and you would be surprised at the number of times trains are booked through T3 possessions.

There have also been real-life timetables that were just plain unworkable.

Forum rules forbid me from quoting one area manager on a timetable he'd inherited (by the time I worked for him it had been substantially recast and the area worked quite smoothly, I recall). And I heard tell of a South Eastern timetable of (I think) the early 1970s that had such nonsenses as crew changes at New Cross in the middle of the peak (all to extract the maximum number of driving hours from the minimum traincrew establishment) that not even the best operating in the world could ever have run. The front-line staff were in despair (and the manager telling the tale added that he had got into the habit of taking his late-turn supervisors from one station for a pint at the end of their shift just to offer a bit of support & empathy - they would've been likely to jack the job in if someone didn't and they were good solid railwaymen he knew he couldn't afford to lose).

when doing my euston TT, there were a large number of platform clashe in the real documentation. i chose to correct these to prevent the sim becoming unplayable if someone replatformed incorrectly. it seems to happen quite a lot, but as said before, signalmen are able to work around such things with a bit of local knowledge.

I have yet to find a platform conflict in a station working book as of yet though

They do occur in the real WTTs I'm sure there's a Manchester Pic - Bangor booked into Platform 2 at Chester, which just happens to be a bay platform; not only that it's not even accessible from the Manchester end.

Fun stories all! I guess it takes a bit of adjustment to cope with the idea that Simsig timetables are actually from real life, with all the warts that implies.
