When I worked in the panel we used to wind up one of the supervisors by talking about the extension of the Third Rail through Westbury as far as Bath Spa.

Now that's horrid

In similar vein there's the story of a manager attending a Western Region investment planning meeting one April 1st. The purpose of the meeting was to decide on the allocation of funds for the earliest planning stage of investment proposals. He put in a proposal seeking authority to improve passenger comfort and rolling stock running characteristics and to increase maximum speeds at a number of locations by widening the track gauge on the Region.

We don't want any of that nasty "third rail" business on our region, thankyou very much!

It's bad enough having the knitting going further than Airport Junction.

As usual, preparation for the meeting involved all concerned glancing through the papers in a couple of minutes during the journey.

It went through on the nod.

The manager concerned had to make his peace with the Regional Operations Manager after the meeting. Luckily the ROM had a sense of humour (quite apart from being another Western man).
