Maybe someone can assist me here; I have a USB stick that works fine on my ACER laptop but every time I use my son's ACER (slightly different model by similar age) the stick driver can't be found and I have to go though some "repair" rigmarole which gets it to work but it forgets the next time. Anyway by accident I found that if I inserted the stick into a different USB port (normally occupied by his wireless mouse which is why I did not try before) it works no-problem. On going back to my computer I find that infact it has the same problem if I use a different port to normal. In other words for some reason the same ports on each machine react the same way and either recognise the stick or do not- which leads me to think it's intentional - or at least a common fault. There are no apparent problems with other USB devices in any of the ports. By the same token my wife brought home her work laptop (not an ACER) and she was having difficulty with the USB mouse. I suggested she try a different port and hey- it worked. Is this normal and is there any way to fix permanently? Have tried searching the net but can't seem to find the identical issue or a fix that I understand. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

Each port gets its own drivers ..by the look of it there is a bogey driver for that port in the registry somewhere and it needs to be cleaned out. I did this before and found it but it was difficult !

We would need your operating system version and maybe some more detailed information like chipset model. Intel or AMD, has USB 3.0 or not, everything can make a huge difference. You should also check the "Device Manger" (if it is Windows). You can open it by right-clicking on the "Computer" (or "My Computer"  icon -> "Manage", then select "Device Manager" on the left navigation pane. There should be a section named "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and under it lists all USB controllers and devices. It should refresh whenever you plug in or remove a device.

If you can post the Acer model number of the computers, then we'll be able to lookup what chipset or USB controller it has.

No help at all, but I've had USB sticks that refuse to work in some computers and work fine in others. I never spotted a pattern, and that was with multiple suppliers of many sticks at work. The occasional one found itself inserted between foot and floor.

Heh, this has been a problem plaguing portable media storage for years. Windows 7 works a bit differently when it comes to drivers than previous Windows versions - it has to install the driver for a device for each USB socket individually. Why? Who knows. But it does bring some interesting problems to the table. USB sticks are a pain in the posterior. Some work in most computers, others refuse to work in any computer, and the rest behave. It's a nightmare. It's all about manufacturer's standards. While the USB protocol is an international standard, flash memory is not. It all depends on the computer's Motherboard and the USB stick's controller board. If they don't agree with each other, you've had it. Thanks for you comments which boil down to - its most likely to just be the way it is.
