Is the second (smaller) arrow (the right-hand one) on the Down Main between Carlisle North Jn and Caldew Jn spurious, or does it serve some sort of actual purpose? Just, it looks a bit out of place to me, and seems to have no function but to light up, which is exactly what the bigger arrow to it's left is already doing?!

Am I onto something here, and it is a wannabe Direction Of Flow arrow; or does it have a purpose that I've perhaps missed in all the excitement with the whole simulation?

Hmm, to me it simply looks like a way of indicating the preferred direction of travel over that piece of track. It would probably look a bit better if the two arrows were actually touching each other, but that's apparently not possible with the font used to display the symbols.
Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

I believe the whole symbol is meant to be a double arrow to indicate a route has been set in the standard direction of a route over that section of track, whereas routes going the in the wrong direction over that section only get the single flow arrow pointing the other way to show their route is not in the usual direction.
I'm not certain mind, but I think from other sims I've seen similar symbols on such as Edinburgh that this is likely what this symbol means.

Ahhhh, just looked at the signal map for Saltley and I note that the same exists at Snow Hill Tunnel.

Guess I'll just go and get my coat and go back to signalling school for a refresher course.

Looks like you need it, the time you've been off the Forum :-)
