I see that several of the simulations don't want to use the splash(n).jpg pics that are installed with their sim.
For example,

  • NE V3.238 Scot starts off with a splach of 'Foxhall Junction looking West', despite there being 21 individual Splash sceeens available in its own folder.

  • CScot V3.238 starts off with a splach of 'Foxhall Junction looking West' (18 splashes available)

  • Cowlairs V3.238 ditto but 5 splashes

  • Edinburgh V.238 ditto but 19 splashes present from the previous version 203

Some other simulations seem to cycle through their individual collection of splash pics on successive starts. (e.g Trent and Gloucester).

What is the mechanism used to ensure that the SIM uses its own splash screens? I have installed using the default locations in Windows XP(SP3) and have the most recent system files installed. I wonder if there is a missing registry key or a .ini file.

Please review and advise. thank you.

You say "in its own folder". Is that the same folder as the .exe or a sub-folder of that (if you are not using the Public Documents option, the same sub-folder as the TTs)? The sub-folder should be named as the first part of the .exe; for example the .exe for Kings Cross is KingsX.exe and the sub-folder is \KingsX. Not sure where they go if you are using Public Documents as I keep things in my own filing system.

The splash screens need to be in the subfolder rather than the main folder.

All works fine for me. The jpg files need to be in the Sim's folder.

Just tested on CScot on my system (XP SP3). If the splashes are in the same folder as cscot.exe the splash screen only shows the default Foxhall Jn shot. If the splash screens are in a cscot subfolder of the folder where the cscot.exe file is living, then they show correctly. The crucial thing seems to be the subfolder (which the installation file created on my system without any input from me).

John, the jpg files need to be in a subfolder of the folder containing the exe file. If you install it correctly (XP) the exe file is placed in the Simsig folder and the jpg files in the CScot folder.

Well, thanks for these replies.

As I said in my post, I used the default installation options, as I have for each SIM and the SIM System files. Therefore, the Splash jpgs were installed into, for example, c:\Program Files\Simsig\NEScot which after installation, holds 4 timetable files (2 x .WTT and 2 x .WTR) and 21 x .jpg files and finally, 1 x .doc file. NEScot.exe is in c:\Program Files\Simsig (which also holds the executables for each other sim as well as their uninstall files)

Correspondingly, the c:\Program Files\Simsig\Trent holds 2 x timetable files and 6 x jpg. Yet these 4 just-released Scottish SIMs, straight from download and standard installation without error don't seem to find their respective splash files. Whereas, the Trent simulation does, without fail.

Is there something wrong with the installation process or with the SIM application itself or with some other component? Where is the path to the Splash jpg files held - is it in the SIM application itself or the registry or some other location - there doesn't appear to be any Simsig files in c:\Documents and Settings?

I have installed CScot on another PC (also winXP) with the same result.

I thought that ("If the splash screens are in a cscot subfolder of the folder where the cscot.exe file is living, then they show correctly"was the point I was making.

Thank you James. that solves the problem. It would appear that the Released V3.238 sims that are available the four Scottish Sims all have that option preset.

I don't think that is a very good idea, since it also causes the Sim to appear as if there are no timetables and it is therefore necessary to browse to the subfolder to locate the timetables.

I suggest that these SIMs be corrected in that respect. Look at how much effort has been put in today by everyone on this topic - where the subject of the solution does not, so far as I can see, appear in any of the documentation.

Thanks again.

Although it has been covered a gazillion times for people who can't find the TTs.
