IIRC yarnton is an AHB which explains everything....

I used to use that crossing a lot; its quite a busy shortcut in and out of Kidlington.

It's quite odd that NR have come out so soon and said that the crossing was operating normally; normally all comment is reserved until the RAIB publish their report.

There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

I guess given that there have been "faults" in the past they felt it necessary to make a statement.

Crossings have data loggers so it's very easy to determine beyond all reasonable doubt that the crossing was working.

The headline has now changed to "Man dies after car hit by train at Yarnton level crossing", last updated by the BBC at 20:42.


The photo shows a "Red Man" pedestrian light, I wasn't aware that these were allowed at level crossings. The photo shows a freightliner train and a crumpled blue car on the track so I presume it isn't a library photo.

Looking on Google Maps, it looks like there is a footpath on one side of the road, and the pedestrian stop light is to warn walkers approaching from the side without the AHB barrier; no light needed in the other direction as the half barrier does that function.
I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

Actually I think that kind of statement is usually released very quickly - it's often on the one-page summary that RAIB publish when they announce an investigation has begun, which is usually within days of the incident. I guess for one thing they need to determine whether the crossing is functioning correctly for when they re-open the railway. As per Firefly too.

Others will be able to back this up more but they are allowed and are present at other locations, for example Haxby Road LC, York and Lincoln High Street LC (I believe)

Being an ex Oxford Driver I can recall at least 2 similar collisions at Sandy Lane. I'm pretty sure it's people taking the risk as it's an AHB

of course the forward facing camera on the train will give most answers. I think most trains have them now?

I wouldn't be surprised if it became compulsory at some point - very useful in a number of ways.

Between the camera footage (if it exists) and the data logger at the crossing, it should conclusively prove one way or the other whether or not the crossing was working. Modern data loggers log relay movements to the fraction of a second for both positions, and are very reliable.
