I've got BT Infinity with the BT Home Hub 3 and set up port forwarding successfully eventually today however for some reason one of my friends couldn't connect to my Waterloo session yet had no problems connecting to my Brighton session - any idea why that might be?

total stab in the dark since i have zero experience in hosting or joining MP sessions and little experience in port forwarding from home routers etc. Given these huge caveats:

were you running both sessions concurrently? If so i'm assuming they'd have to be using different server ports to avoid a clash (not sure whether you choose the port yourself or whether the server increments until it finds an available one on your behalf so you might not have noticed it). Also i'm assuming that port forwarding on a home router might be on a port-by-port basis rather than being globally permissive. In which case were both port numbers configured to be forwarded?

Sorry if this causes more confusion than solutions.

Can you choose which port to use with Waterloo? It might use the (old) default port of 4321.

I just launched Waterloo to check that and it turns out that it is not that old. It uses 50505 by default and allows choosing another port just like any other modern sim.

I always use 50505 as the port bearing in mind I use 50505 as my primary port and 50507 as my secondary port.

I'm just puzzled why Waterloo didn't want to work

Indeed, using different port numbers for the sims is only necessary if both run at the same time. If you're doing only one game at a time then both on 50505 should be fine.

Maybe your firewall has already white-listed Brighton but not Waterloo yet? When I'm hosting on my laptop (with McAfee Internet Security) the McAfee firewall asks me if I should allow incoming traffic to the sim the first time I host a certain sim. If you run Waterloo full-screen, then you may not have seen your firewall's question. Also sometimes it's asking it too late.

As another thought, were you both using the same version of Waterloo? There is the old paged version which is no longer available but may still be a legacy sim on some systems and the newer scrolly version v2.202; they will not be compatible if you try and multiplay with one version on the host and the client using the other.

Both have been white listed and Waterloo is run in windowed mode.

If you are running in Windowed mode, that implies you are running the old pre-scrolly version (v24). If you are using that version, the port is fixed at 4321.

To check this, when you load the sim and select Network Play then Server, do you get the chance to enter your port number (or select primary or secondary port)? If you don't you are on v24 and must use port 4321 as Matt Cooper has already suggested in this thread..

I'm perplexed as to where the scrolly version came from as I only just converted the data it in November past. Are you sre it's scrolly, I don't seem to have v2.202, only 2.201 (my last build at the time) - dates match otherwise.

Neither of us is correct. I took the information about scrolly from the list of sims on the WIki where it is marked a scrolly. Opening the sim shows that it is definitely paged. However the sim is as downloaded from the Official Software section of the site where Geoff posted it as v2.202 on 13/11/09. The properties of the exe also show it as v2.202.

It does mean that my earlier posting is total rubbish but that is by the by.

Right, thanks for clarifying. I suspect I completed the Data as 2.201 then a CC update occurred before Geoff uploaded.

I think you've cracked it, I don't get a chance to enter my port number at all.

I think Matt cracked it long before I posted anything.

I've got the old Waterloo and no, port 4321 does not work :(

What happens is I host using 4321 as the port, my friend connects then Waterloo a second later disconnects him, whys that?

Rather than fighting a losing battle, why not download v2.202 and run that on whatever port you choose.

Sounds like your friend is running V2.202. You won't be able to get that to connect to your paged version irrespective of what port you use.

No matter what sim, if you are playing multi-player, all participants *MUST* use the same version.

I agree with Postal's advice, download V2.202 and use that.

I have Waterloo Paged here, it is not fixed at 4321 but allows choosing a port just like any other modern sim, with 50505 being default.

By the way, I didn't even know there was a scrolly Waterloo. The paged version I am having here is V2.202.
Are you sure you are not confusing it with the North London Line? For that sim, what you are saying is true. NLL paged had port 4321, NLL scrolly does hosting like any modern sim.
