I've heard a story about a test run in 1938 in which a Hungarian 3 or 4-axle fish van ran to London from Budapest. The van was packed with cultured freshwater fish. The unload was somewhere in the (probably East) London Suburbs (Docklands? Bromley? Woolwich?...). The water had to be replaced every 8 to 24 hours (depending on the air temperature) along the route. The exhausted water had to be drained onto the four-foot, then reload from a water column. The van had a fairly modern ventilation system to give enough oxygene for the fish. I don't know if this test has been repeated ever. Has anyone any more information about that test run or its conclusions?
